It's been over a year since Nier: Automata, the action-RPG from Square-Enix and PlatinumGames, released and this month's issue of the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu checked in with the team and director Yoko Taro.
The team is celebratory over the sales, having expected an outside chance of one million sales and were completely blown away by two million. They also told Famitsu that there is one thing in the game that no one has discovered yet, something that designer Takahisa Taura and Yoko Taro called "unpleasant," that they have never seen anyone talk about online.
Taro explained that they aren't going to say what it is simply because "problems may occur" and left it at that.
In a game where even strange capitalization and character tattoos might hold massive lore implications, there being a detail hidden deep within the game that not even dataminers have found is certainly intriguing. It could be as simple as a weird glitch, as the article makes mention of keeping in strange camera glitches because they fit the game thematically, or it could be something deeper.
It is worth mentioning that Taro does tend to put story details in the oddest of places. Nier was spun off from an ending off Drakengard and had its own artbook with exclusive story vignettes that helped shape that story. Automata itself was preceded by a stage play and is getting another second stage play later this year, not to mention an addendum to the ending was provided at the Nier: Automata concert in Japan last year.
In the article, Taro reconfirmed that a new game is in planning stages and that they hope to have something big to announce for Nier's ten-year anniversary in 2020.

Our Take
As a big fan of Nier: Automata, I am really curious what this could possibly be. I hope it's a big story thing, but honestly I'd be fine if it's just a weird glitch they thought worked with the game.
