Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Removed From Wii U Digital Store

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Retro Studios' 2D platformer from 2014, has been delisted from Nintendo's Wii U eShop in North America today.

Fans on the Wii U subreddit noticed it missing today, which seemed rather abrupt as people have been able to buy it as recently as yesterday. The top comment points out that Nintendo's website, which previously sold digital and physical versions of a game, has been updated to only sell physical versions.

We have confirmed both these changes ourselves on the Wii U eShop and website.

Players who have already bought the Wii U version of Tropical Freeze are able to redownload the game, so there is nothing to worry about there. You can, of course, also still purchase the game physically. It's worth noting that disappearing from the eShop has happened before to Nintendoland, which returned a day later with its removal being labeled a mistake.

We reached out to Nintendo for comment and clarification this morning, but have not received anything by the time of writing.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was a Nintendo Selects title on Wii U, making the game $20 on the eShop and retail. You can watch us play the Switch version of the game, with its new Funky mode, right here. The Switch version of the game is full price.

Our Take
The initial suspicion is that Nintendo removed the lower price option from a store they have complete control over, but it could also just be a mistake like Nintendoland was. If they did remove it because Tropical Freeze comes out on Switch this week for $60, then that's fairly brazen.

Dragon Quest XI Preorders Net Extra Items At GameStop And Amazon

Square Enix has announced preorder bonuses for the upcoming Dragon Quest XI on PlayStation 4, depending on where you preorder the game.

For GameStop in the United States, or EBGames in Canada, players who preorder get the following items:

  • The “Elevating Vest” - A snazzy waistcoat that awards the wearer with extra experience every time they win a battle; and
  • Three“Seeds of Skill” - A nifty nut that confers an extra skill point upon anyone who eats it (consumed upon use).

Meanwhile, preordering Amazon gets you a different kind of vest.

  • “Arriviste’s Vest” - A glitzy gold waistcoat that awards the wearer with extra money every time a battle is won; and
  • Three “Seeds of Skill” - A nifty nut that confers an extra skill point upon anyone who eats it (consumed upon use).

The choice there is whether you're getting experience or extra gold. Consider it an in-vest-ment in your future. The effects of both items is relatively minuscule – each vest only gets you an extra ten percent of the total up to 75 gold or 15 experience points. So total winnings from a battle being 800 gold would only net you 75 extra gold.

Dragon Quest XI releases on PlayStation 4 and Steam on September 4. A Switch version is coming down the line much later and the 3DS version is not coming to North American shores at all.

God Of War Director Says He Has Plans For Five More Games In The Series

In an interview with Kotaku, director of the latest (and many say greatest) God of War game Cory Barlog was asked about his future plans for the series.

Kotaku's Jason Schreier asked Barlog about future games in a longer interview on the site. "So how much of the future game plan do you have mapped out in your head?"

"Five games," Barlog replied.

"So that’s 25 years?" Schreier asked, referring to the PlayStation 4 God of War taking five years to develop. "Is that what you’re prepared for?"

"No. I want to figure out how to make these things faster, man." Barlog then explains how he hopes and plans to make these games faster from here on out, hopefully not taking 25 years to complete.

You can find the full interview here, but warning that it starts off spoilery and only gets more spoilery from there. God of War was released on April 20 exclusively on the PlayStation 4. Check out our review of the game here and the first episode of the God of War Game Club here.

Our Take
I am not sure I am down for five more God of War games, but I'm also not sure I take Barlog's statement at face value. It's definitely easy to want to make five more games, but practically speaking it is a lot harder to do. We'll see what Barlog accomplishes, though, as he definitely caught me by surprise this time.

Report: Pokémon Go Team Working On Gen IV, New Level Cap, And More

In the nearly two years since Pokémon Go released, developer Niantic has continually evolved the experience. Doctor PoGo, a hardcore player who sat next to Niantic CEO John Hanke on a flight, claims Pokémon Go is on its way to its next stage of evolution.

According to Doctor PoGo, Niantic is working on several changes, including the addition of Gen IV Pokémon and a new PvP system. In addition, die-hard players will delight in a new level cap beyond the current cap of 40. Also, if you've ever wanted to submit a Poké Stop for consideration in the game, that ability is also on the horizon, which could help players outside of major cities and parks to enjoy the game more. Hanke also reportedly told Doctor PoGo that Niantic will be cracking down on cheaters and spoofers even harder than before.

Perhaps the most unexpected news is that Niantic is going to try its hand at Pokémon Go Fest once again. You may remember last year's Pokémon Go Fest in Chicago, which was such a disaster that Niantic issued refunds, gave attendees $100 in in-game currency, and reportedly settled a lawsuit stemming from the event to the tune of $1.5 million.

Doctor PoGo says he recognized Hanke and chose to sit next to him and that the two spoke the entire flight. He posted a video of him sitting next to Hanke, which you can see below. While Doctor PoGo didn't share anything in that video, it did verify that he indeed sat next to Hanke on his flight.

Next, the Pokémon Go YouTube community latched onto Doctor PoGo's information. Doctor PoGo endorsed the summary of prominent YouTuber Mystic7. You can view Mystic7's video summary here.

We reached out to Niantic for comment, but did not hear back as of this writing. We will update the story if the developer provides a statement or response.

[Source: Doctor PoGo on Twitter, Reversal on Twitter, Mystic7 on YouTube via Pokémon Go Hub]

Our Take
As with all reports, you should obviously take this with a grain of salt. However, with a video of Doctor PoGo sitting next to John Hanke, it's feasible that this conversation occurred. No timetable was given for any of the mentioned updates, so we'll have to wait and see how Niantic rolls it all out if this is indeed legitimate information. Now we just need to get someone on a plane with Hanke to ask him about trading.

The Sports Desk – Flirting With Unforced Errors In AO International Tennis

AO International Tennis from Big Ant Studios released in Australia earlier this year (as simply AO Tennis) to less-than-stellar reviews. The game seemed to be rushed out to capitalize on the Australian Open grand-slam tournament, with the developer promising modes and content after release. While I can't speak to all the changes that have been made for the upcoming international release on May 8, looking at the game's official forum, updates have been occurring, including the addition of a tutorial mode. I recently got some hands-on time with a pre-release copy of AO International Tennis, and found a positive aspect of the game amidst the changes.

Many gamers will like the title's customization options, which allow players to make and share the creations of tennis legends (like the Boris Becker I downloaded, in the video below), as well as make-your-own career-mode players and stadiums.

I, however, like the title's groundstrokes – specifically the stroke meter. Now, AO International Tennis at the moment is far from perfect. Players can warp into animations, the drop shot is overpowered, the net game is erratic, and higher difficulties and doubles play can be simply too hard to play. In the latter case, there are numerous shots that come back too fast or are at unplayable angles.

Despite these flaws, I liked getting into volleys due to the way the game makes you time your strokes to a color-coded shot meter. The face buttons (there's also a right analog swing option) naturally correspond to shot types like a flat or topspin shot, but getting a nice, bright green indicator telling you that you've timed your shot or serve right is what feels satisfying.

It's usually not difficult in the game to get your player in a good position and return the ball back to sustain a volley, but ending the point on a down-the-line rocket or a well-placed shot is harder to do. That's what makes getting the timing down fun. Your shot timing changes when you have to get off a quick ball or chase one down just to stay alive, and while it's not hard to place a ball near the line, it can be to put one just on it. Thus, flirting with unforced errors – odd as it may sound – is why I liked playing AO International Tennis, flaws and all. Because while an almost-green shot will stay safely inbounds, it's the perfectly green one that will hit the line and possibly be unreturnable by your opponent.

There's also variance due to your player's overall skills, which feels good as your created career player (you can also start with a licensed star with static abilities) gets better and better.

You can check out the game in the video I put together below, which shows off everything from customization and your career to various gameplay sequences – including some of the higher difficulty encountered in singles and doubles play.

I hope developer Big Ant continues to work on the title before and after release, because it's not without its merits.

PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2019 RUMORED LEAK INDICATES MORE LICENSES

Konami may have just dropped the Champions League license, but the company is definitely not turning away from the series. A rumored leak from Sony's Hong Kong online PlayStation store seems to indicate that the franchise is, in fact, picking up more official licenses.

A post at Evo-Web has a picture of the store page (which has since been taken down) along with details such as an August 30 release date and a description that listed a "huge addition of licensed leagues" for the game. The series currently has league licenses such as the top two French leagues and the Dutch Eredivisie, as well as team licenses for individual clubs like Barcelona and Liverpool, and national teams. If the page information is correct, at a minimum players will get a chance to see more official leagues. Some screens with the leak show off current MyClub legend David Beckham and Barcelona's Philippe Coutinho, so these licenses should return for PES 2019.

Currently any unlicensed teams or leagues can be imported and/or edited on the PS4 and PC.

Rival EA has an exclusive partnership with the popular English Premier League that runs through next season, and I fully expect this to be renewed. However, Konami's practice of signing other leagues and splashy deals with individual clubs and teams will clearly continue. Getting Germany's Bundesliga (which doesn't appear to be exclusive to EA) or Italy's Serie A (which also isn't) would be a nice prize for PES.

The leaked product page also mentions Master League career-mode changes such as the inclusion of the pre-season International Champions Cup (which Konami signed last year) and an "in-depth transfer system." Elsewhere in the game, MyClub is reportedly getting an overhaul, players are getting 11 new skill traits and visible stamina, and more.

Check out the rumored details and more screens over at Evo-Web

Sonic Mania Adventures Second Episode Now Available

The incredibly charming animated shorts centered around Sonic Mania has added a second episode online.

Sonic Mania Adventures, a decidedly confusing but appropriate brand name, had a first episode a few weeks ago where Sonic found out Eggman was searching for the chaos emeralds, as he tends to do. In the second episode, Sonic finds Tails along the way and then just dashes off on his own without his fox buddy in tow.

The animated shorts are written and directed by Tyson Hesse, who was behind Sonic Mania's animated trailers, intro, and some fairly well known comedic Sonic fan comics.

Fortnite Season 4 Coming Tomorrow

After about a month of teasing, Fortnite season 4 is at least being shown tomorrow and will bring answers to all the questions Epic has been raising.

Meteors started showing up earlier this month above Tilted Towers, causing fans to go crazy with speculation over what it could mean. Amidst the ensuing confusing and conversation, Epic added jokes and signs to the roof of Tilted Towers and started making the meteors impact on the surface.

The meteors caused little to no damage to the actual stage, but considering the teaser image and the "brace for impact," it seems likely something is becoming a crater and superheroes are emerging from it. Regardless of how it turns out, it looks like tomorrow will be the end of all the fan questions and speculation over the last month.

Our Take
A month is the perfect time for a mystery and it looks like Epic is determined to make it pay off. I hope there's more than just superhero skins and they have some pretty cool new ideas for season 4.

New Gameplay Today – Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze On Switch

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a pretty great game, but it may not have found the audience it deserved on its original Wii U home. Fear not! Nintendo is bringing the game to Switch in a few days, with a port that includes a new playable character. Join us as Kyle shows off Brian "Funky" Kong and his sweet moves.

Kyle calls Funky "easy mode," which is fairly self evident. The dude can hover mid-air on his surfboard, and even stand on spikes! Sheesh! Don't worry, though – he still manages to die at least once, though he will probably claim that it was on purpose so we could confirm that he wasn't using any invincibility codes.

Free World Cup Update Coming To FIFA 18

A World Cup trophy has alluded Lionel Messi up to this point, but you can make this the year in the free World Cup update to FIFA 18 (PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch versions), coming on May 29.

The additional content includes playing as the 32 officially qualified countries in an online tournament or friendlies, a custom tournament mode that allows you to play as non-qualified countries such as the USA or Italy, kick-off play, and the World Cup's inclusion in Ultimate Team mode. The latter includes a revised, dynamic chemistry system between players related to what happens in the real-world tournament, and World Cup Icon players.

Of course, the gameplay is wrapped in the event's trappings such as the 12 official stadiums in Russia, the official World Cup ball, cinematic scenes, and more.

The inclusion of the tournament in an existing title marks a change from previous years when EA put out a separate game commemorating the World Cup.

The World Cup is also coming to FIFA Mobile for a limited time starting on June 6.

World Cup group play begins on June 14.

New Solo: A Star Wars Story Featurette Reveals A Surprising Amount Of New Footage

Today Disney released a new behind the scenes featurette for Solo: A Star Wars Story where Donald Glover, Ron Howard. Emilia Clarke, and basically everyone except the notably Alden Ehrenreich (the guy who's playing Young Han) talk about how excited they are for the movie.

The interviews themselves are probably a little boring. However, for some reason, intercut between all these interviews is mostly new footage of the movie that hasn't been in previous trailers, including some nice scenes where Han jokes with Chewie and Lando.

Avengers: Infinity War On Track To Have The Biggest Opening Weekend Of All Time

Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War opened this weekend and, shocker, it's doing incrediblely well both critically and at the box office. In fact, according to estimates from box office trackers like Box Office Mojo, the movie has already grossed $250,000,000.

If that estimate is true, and it likely is, that means that Infinity War has beat out the record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Guess it's a great time to be in the super hero business, huh?

Reader Discussion – What Was The Last Game That Surprised You?

I'm going to level with you. As someone who liked but did not love the original series, I did not expect God of War to be as good as it is. The pacing, beautiful writing, fantastic combat, and awe-inspiring boss fight have all made the game an early Game Of The Year leader for me.

So what about you, reader? When was the last time a game surprised you with just how great it is? I think for me, before God of War, it'd probably be Breath Of The Wild and then Wolfenstein: The New Order before it.

Symmetra Will Likely Change From Support To Defense Class In Forthcoming Update

After this month's earlier Hanzo update, it looks like Symmetra is next up for some big changes. In a forum reply, lead designer Geoff Goodman laid out some of the changes coming to the support character, most notably that she wouldn't be playing support anymore and would, instead, likely become a defense class character.

Here's what Goodman said:

We currently have moved her to Defense. We tried a healer version which had her turrets healing instead of dealing damage, but it felt super awkward, especially with how fast Overwatch moves.

That said, we are playing with a new way her turrets deploy. Instead of having to stick them directly onto a wall herself, she can now fire an un-deployed version like a projectile, which sticks to walls/ceilings/etc. Once it sticks, it will unfold like it does on the wall currently when she builds them.

This helps for a bunch of reasons but one of the big ones is that it makes it a lot easier to play her on offense or just be able to preposition her turrets much more easily/quickly.

Be sure to note the use of the word "currently" here, which carries the implication that none of this is set in stone. However, here are a scattershot for possible changes that Goodman has mentioned for you Symmetra lovers to mull over:

  • The shield generator is gone "at the moment."
  • Symmetra's Photon Barrier is now her ultimate.
  •  The teleporter is becoming the E ability. It's also changed a bit, according to Goodman: "You place the exit like you normally do, except that you can place it up to 25 meters away, instead of only right in front of you. We’re experimenting with what works and what doesn’t but currently you can teleport things such as Torbjorn turrets, D.Va’s exploding mech, Junkrat tire, etc."

For more on Overwatch, be sure to watch us play through the Retribution event in the game here.

Bluehole's Anti-Cheat Efforts For PUBG Result In Arrests

Developer Bluehole has been pushing hard against cheaters and hackers ever since PUBG came to prominence last year. Today, the studio released a community update where it notified players that 15 individuals had been arrested for developing and selling programs that not only let players use cheats in0game but also stole personal data from those same players.

Here's the pertinent text from Bluehole:

Earlier this month, on April 25th, 15 suspects were arrested for developing and selling hacking/cheating programs that affect PUBG. It was confirmed that malicious code, including Trojan horse software, was included in some of these programs and was used to steal user information.

Here’s some translated information from the local authorities we worked with on this case:

"15 major suspects including “OMG”, “FL”, “火狐”, “须弥” and “炎黄” were arrested for developing hack programs, hosting marketplaces for hack programs, and brokering transactions. Currently the suspects have been fined approximately 30mil RNB ($5.1mil USD). Other suspects related to this case are still being investigated.

Some hack programs that are being distributed through the internet includes a Huigezi Trojan horse*(Chinese backdoor) virus. It was proven that hack developers used this virus to control users’ PC, scan their data, and extract information illegally.”

You can read the whole post here. For more on PUBG, be sure to check out our Virtual Life on the game here.

Our Take
It's rare that hackers are held accountable for marring online gaming experiences so this is rather refreshing to see but also kind of astounding. Five million dollars is quite a chunk of change. We're curious to see how many other suspects are brought in as the months go on, and how this story develops and affects other online gaming communities.

Trailblazers Is A Paint-Splattering Racing Game Arriving Next Month

Trailblazers, an upcoming multiplayer racer from developer Supergonk, has its own unique twist. As you race toward the finish line, you also attempt to splatter the track with more ink than other players.

As our news editor Imran Khan pointed out in his best indies of PAX East round-up, Trailblazers is as if you combined Wipeout and Splatoon. At the end of a race, points are allotted towards not just who was quickest, but who covered most of the track with ink. Every lap, however, your splatters could get covered up by your opponents. You play in teams of 3v3.

Supergonk recently released a new trailer, which you can view below.

Square Enix Details Shadow Of The Tomb Raider's Special Editions, Season Pass

It's Possible That Eidos Montreal Almost Made Final Fantasy XV

A recent video from YouTuber Super Bunnyhop, also known as games journalist George Weidman, suggests that Eidos Montreal was once working on what later became Final Fantasy XV.

Weidman tells us in the video that this report has anonymous sources, so it's unclear whether all of what's said here is valid. Nonetheless, it paints an interesting picture.

Following Eidos Montreal's launch of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which received critical acclaim, one of the game's producers thought up a new RPG concept. Yoichi Wada, who was Square Enix's president at the time, gave Eidos Montreal permission to tackle the next Final Fantasy game. It was being designed with the Western audience in mind, so it was codenamed Project W in pre-production.

The game was to be a space opera and have a visual design similar to fractals. It told the story of the protagonist searching for his love interest, Nova, and entering a complicated love triangle because of it.

In 2012, the concept was formally pitched to Final Fantasy producers and was promptly rejected. The game continued its pre-production under a new codename, Project Nova, and was slated to instead be a new IP. After failed pitches to several publishers, however, it never found the funding needed to survive. Project Nova was then cancelled.

Our Take
Though his sources are unnamed, Weidman has previously put together credible reports about video games. This video should nonetheless be taken with a grain of salt, since little proof is given.

Korean And Australian Rating Boards Leak Hitman: Sniper Assassin

According to both Korean and Australian listings on their online rating boards' websites, the next Hitman is titled Hitman: Sniper Assassin and it's coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Sniper Assassin has not yet officially been announced by developer IO Interactive. The name bears similarities to two of the studio's previous games: Hitman: Sniper for iOS and Android, and Hitman: Sniper Challenge.

The listings don't provide much information outside of the title and platforms.

For more on Hitman, read our review of Hitman: Season 1 by heading here.

Our Take
Though these listings were leaked before an announcement was made, it nonetheless strongly suggests that Hitman: Sniper Assassin is the next installment. Still, it's best to take these rumors with a grain of salt until we hear from IO Interactive officially. It's possible that this title has ties to the mobile game Hitman: Sniper since the names are similar.

Dress As Dante In The Monster Hunter World Event Quest

Capcom has released the latest event quest in Monster Hunter World, titled Code: Red, and nets you the outfit of Devil May Cry protagonist Dante.

The quest, which has you run through a gauntlet of monsters, gets you the Red Orb item which will let you build the various parts of Dante's costume. You have to be hunter rank 14, but joining the quest has you take on an Anjanath, Odogoron, Rathian, and finish with the elder dragon Teostra.

You might need more items than just Red Orbs for your armor and sword, though, so hopefully you can grab the rare materials you need from the quest itself.

Code: Red is time-limited, so you'll need to act fast before the party, which is getting crazy, ends.

Nintendo Plans To Release More Online Subscription Information In May

Nintendo has revealed that details on their online subscription service needed for online multiplayer next month.

While the service is still set for September, Nintendo has been completely mum on details for the service. The last time any details were given about the service was outgoing CEO Tatsumi Kimishima says the company is aiming for around $20 a year for the cost. It has not yet been said what, if anything, the service will entail beyond just an online multiplayer pass.

The Nintendo online app for mobile phones, which Nintendo has indicated is the cornerstone of their Switch online experience, still only supports Splatoon 2 and has not been updated since 2017 with a vague description of bug fixes.

Our Take
They definitely have to offer more for the cost than just online multiplayer. It's one thing to charge for online, it's a whole different thing to come in a year and a half after launch and charge for an online experience most consider sub-par.

BattleTech Review – Middling Mechanized Mayhem

The beloved MechWarrior/BattleTech IPs return to the classic strategy space loaded with giant mechanized armors and the pilots who command them. As a longtime fan of the franchise, I was pleased to see plenty of customization options for my mechs big and small, true to form with heat sinks, jump jets, and particle projection cannons (PPCs). However, frustrating gameplay elements, a plodding pace, and frequent “stress to progress” initiatives keep players in tough spots even as they attempt to acquire a bay full of combat-worthy scrap.

The core concept is simple: Bring up to four mechs (and their pilots) into a huge variety of contract encounters. The ability to select missions lets you plan your strategy – picking cold environments for your heat-heavy mechs to excel in, for instance. You also take on simple tasks to earn cash to upgrade your ship, buy weapons, purchase mechs, make repairs, and pay the constant upkeep on everything. The missions run the gamut of purported objectives, but almost always boil down to blasting your way through mechs and vehicles. This focus on meaty combat works out to be more than fine because that’s the real strength of the game; if you’ve played other modern strategy titles like X-COM, you have the general idea of what you’re going to be engaging with.

(Please visit the site to view this media)

The action is fun, with enough freedom to try out many different mech configurations. I enjoyed building melee-centric mechs designed to knock opponents down and unleash flamers and machine guns, as well as long-range heat-hogs designed to take advantage of multiple lasers and PPCs. The combat and related customization options are the stars of the show, and make the tactical warfare worth diving into. Preparing perfectly for a battle and letting loose with your creations feels great, and finishing a map with a huge coffer of supplies without taking a scratch is awesome. Most of your time in BattleTech is spent in battle, and that’s exactly where you want to be.

Encounters are accessible and easy to dive into, as all weapons fire by default (you can dial down and select only certain weapons to fire) and you can clearly see your hit rate. Later, you can get more complex with precision shots designed to nail critical stores of ammo or just blow the legs off a bot. While strategy games are not known for lightning-fast action, a sense of unflattering slowness permeates some missions, with actions and turns playing out across many units – especially the lengthier story encounters.

Strategy off the battlefield can be more important than on it. Your ship, upgrades, pilots, and mechs all cost tons of money, and you need to keep the lights on while attempting to keep everything upgraded to handle continually more challenging encounters. You’re free to roam the galaxy taking on minor missions as much as you like, but eventually you feel the crunch of the taxman and need to push hard into story content to stay above water. It feels too oppressive at times, putting a ton of pressure on the player to take on story missions to keep mechs up to speed. Stopping to smell the roses can be devastating, especially if something goes wrong.

Having one of your mechs get randomly headshot and blown away can result in a frustrating cost that simply cannot be recovered. Saving often, even during a mission, is essential. “Save scumming” isn’t a practice I advocate for often, but here it must be done to prevent a lucky shot that could literally bury your business in a single salvo. Beyond these design issues, I also experienced myriad crashes and freezes during gameplay that cost me big chunks of time and progress. On the flip side, if you do come up against a foe that might be too much to handle – you can attempt those headshots and hope. If they don’t work, you can load the save. It isn’t a great way to play, but you may feel like your playthrough is backed into a corner sometimes.

Despite some gameplay quibbles, the core loop of BattleTech – mech acquisition, customization, and combat – does a great job of adhering to the source material and providing engaging ballistic battles. Crunching an enemy core under your metal boot or scoping out a target for an enormous missile barrage are satisfying as hell, even if the frame of the title could stand for a little extra armor.

Funny To A Point – 10 Fatherly Lessons From Kratos

After a rough first go, Kratos is taking a second stab at being a father in the newest God of War. While his parenting efforts are a marked improvement over the tremendously low bar he set for himself in the original trilogy, many of the lessons Kratos passes on to his son, Atreus, still leave a lot to be desired.

I started playing the new God of War last week, and while I didn't make enough progress to join our Game Club discussion, I am enjoying it a lot more than any of the previous titles in the series. The focus on thoughtful storytelling and character development makes it a much more compelling adventure to me – as does having the ax equivalent of Thor's hammer that I can instantly recall after hurling it at enemies, crates, and pretty much anything else that catches my eye. Seriously, why don't more games have magic axes? It's amazing!

But just because Sony Santa Monica has penned a remarkable story centering on Kratos' father/son relationship with Atreus doesn't mean he's a good dad. Not that there's any reason to believe he would be – he's killed like a hundred gods, for crying out loud! I mean, maybe you could explain killing one god, but when you're as deep into double digits as Kratos is, you probably ain't winning any custody battles in the future.

Anyhow, I was instantly intrigued by the prospect of analyzing Kratos' actions in God of War not just as the kick-ass god slayer he's always been, but also as a single parent trying to impart some important life lessons to his son. Suffice it to say, it didn't take long to realize that our brooding protagonist won't be receiving a "World's #1 Dad" shirt anytime soon.

Parents take note: Here are 10 life lessons from Kratos that you probably super shouldn't pass on to your kids.

Lesson #1: Stealing From The Dead? Totally Cool!
Virtually all parents set out to teach their kids the importance of sharing, but that lesson usually involves a participant who is A) willing, and B) alive. Otherwise, it's not so much sharing as it is GRAVE ROBBING.

Kratos seems entirely indifferent to that distinction. The first time Atreus sees his dad shove the lid off a coffin and rifle through the corpse's belongings, he utters "What?!" in understandable disbelief. To which Kratos grumbles, "He can no longer use it. We can."

While that's technically true, it's still a pretty bleak outlook on life to be imparting on your impressionable tween. And you can't even use the "desperate times" argument, because the loot in question was a couple hundred hacksilver, which is the Norse equivalent of pocket change. Way to be a role model, Kratos...

Lesson #2: Apologies Are For Losers
Another universal lesson for young kids is learning to say you're sorry when you make a mistake. In Atreus' case, that "mistake" was...not murdering a magic deer successfully during a father-son hunting trip. After getting chewed out by Kratos for missing the majestic creature with his arrow, Atreus apologizes, only to be told, "Don't be sorry. Be better."

Self-improvement is certainly a worthy goal, but you'd think Kratos of all people would recognize the value of acknowledging one's mistakes. He's got one or two biggies himself in his past...

Lesson #3: Don't Listen To Mom
"Listen to your mother," is a go-to refrain for most dads, but Kratos isn't one to defer to the judgement of others (again, the whole god-killing thing...). When the duo tracks the scared-and-probably-1,000-year-old-super deer to some nearby ruins, Atreus pauses.

"He went in the old temple," Atreus says. "But mom told me never to go in there."

Kratos' reply? "We do what we please, boy. No excuses."

Yeah, GREAT guiding principle for a 10-year-old kid. And while Kratos' advice is a moot point in Atreus' case, it is a bit of a retroactive F.U. to his former wife. Also, what if "what he pleases" is being a good boy who listens to his mom? What then, Kratos?!

Lesson #4: Unabashed Hypocrisy
You can chalk up a lot of Kratos' unnecessarily stern behavior to him being a hard-ass – but you can't explain away his hypocrisy quite so easily. When Kratos finally takes down a giant troll that attacks them during their hunting expedition, Atreus lunges at the felled beast and begins slicing it with his knife, while yelling that he isn't afraid. Kratos eventually stops Atreus, and then somberly declares that he's not ready for the adventure ahead.

Excuse me?! Isn't that the point of the whole freaking series? Losing his temper is literally all Kratos has ever done! I mean, he once ripped a dude's head off and then used it as a lantern for the rest of the damn game! A LANTERN! And now he's suddenly all "inside voices"?

You could argue that Kratos' admonishment is more about Atreus losing focus than his actual anger, but that doesn't really fly either – the way I play God of War, Kratos is flailing and flinging himself all over the battlefield with virtually no control whatsoever. Atreus' outburst was a chip off the old block as far as I'm concerned.

Lesson #5: Know When To Shaddup
And the time to shut up is apparently ALL THE TIME. Seriously, if I had a hacksilver for every time Kratos responded to one of Atreus' musings with "Stop talking, boy," I wouldn't have to rob dead people anymore!

That said, it is nice to finally have a protagonist that shares my disdain for small talk with chatty NPCs. Or people in general for that matter. It might not be the best lesson for a young and inquisitive child, but it might come in handy with co-workers...

Lesson #6: Pick Up Your Toys!
One of the optional objectives in God of War is for Kratos to find sets of hidden collectibles, the first of which happens to be carved toys. In a rare display of good parenting, Kratos traipses all over the forest looking for them, effectively teaching Atreus the importance of picking up your toys when you're done playing.

I was surprised – I would've pegged Kratos as the type of dad who would hide them and then tell Atreus that a draugr stole them because that's what happens when you leave your toys out in the yard. Or the type of dad who swears up a storm when he steps on the antlers of your wooden deer in the middle of the night. Either way.

Now that I think of it, though, Kratos does sell all of the collectibles in the game to the dwarven blacksmiths, who are basically the Norse equivalent of Pawn America. So maybe he's still a lousy dad after all.

Lesson #7: How To Handle Uninvited Guests
A note to any Norse census takers out there: Don't just show up on Kratos' doorstep and start asking a bunch of questions. To his credit, Kratos tried to prevent Atreus from seeing how he handles the mysterious visitor that shows up at their house – but that's kind of hard when you also throw them through the house.

On the bright side, I guess Kratos did effectively teach Atreus not to talk to strangers...and to drop a mountain on them when they don't take a hint.

Lesson #8: Human Empathy – Or, Ya Know, The Complete Opposite
After Kratos' less-than-friendly encounter with the stranger, Atreus somberly asks his dad if he's had to kill humans before. Kratos replies that they "do what we must to survive." When Atreus points out that the other humans are also just trying to survive, Kratos gives his pièce de résistance of fatherly advice:

"Close your heart to it... Close your heart to their desperation. Close your heart to their suffering. Do not allow yourself to feel for them..."

So let's see: Do whatever you want, don't say sorry, and blind yourself to the suffering you cause in others. Got it. Guys, I'm seriously starting to wonder if Kratos is a good role model for children...

Lesson #9: An Utter Disdain For Pottery
Seriously, if 6th grade art class taught me anything, it's that clay pots aren't easy to make! Especially way back whenever this game takes place; it's not like you could just stroll down to Dick Blick and buy a hunk of clay and one of those electric spinning wheels that I can't see without immediately thinking of Ghost. It must have been a HUGE pain in the butt to make a giant clay pot – and yet Kratos can't seem to walk 10 feet without smashing one.  Let's hope Atreus doesn't have a budding interest in ceramics; something tells me that career discussion wouldn't go well. Aaaand that's all I got.

Lesson #10: Patience!
I finally figured out one good lesson Kratos teaches Atreus, even if it is a bit of a stretch. Kratos doesn't strike me as a particularly patient guy, but the way I'm playing God of War, Atreus will grow up to have the composure of a saint. All he wants to do is get up the damn mountain, but he's constantly being stymied by my Kratos' obsessive need to check out every nook and cranny of the world, and relentlessly backtrack every time we reach a fork in the road. Atreus' ultimate test of patience came the other night when I fell asleep while playing, leaving Kratos to stare at a tree for two straight hours. I woke up to Atreus muttering some idle dialogue, like "What are we doing?" or "I think we need to go this way," or "Maybe you should go to bed." Come to think of it, that last one was probably my wife. Either way, Atreus clearly hasn't learned his lesson yet. Be silent, BOY!

Nintendo Labo Review – Creativity For A Specific Audience

Labo is a Nintendo product, but it’s not for every Nintendo (or even video game) fan. If the idea of a part-craft, part-video-game toy that is also a programming tool made of cardboard makes you scoff indignantly, having it in your hands won’t suddenly make you a believer. Labo is a bizarre product meant to inspire creative play, and in that regard, it succeeds. For those enamored with toys like Lego, where much of the fun relies on your own creativity, then Labo is absolutely worth your time (or at least one of the two kits is).

Labo Variety Kit
The Variety Kit is the introductory Labo pack and it offers the most to do, both in terms of video gaming and creativity. It includes the cardboard and software necessary to build the RC car, the fishing rod, the motorcycle racing wheel, the house, and the piano (which is the crown jewel of the kit). Every Toy-Con, as Nintendo has dubbed them, takes about an hour to build, though the piano is the exception, clocking in at about two and a half hours.

The building process is fun, and the time goes by quickly. The instructions walking you through the process will be familiar to Lego builders, but the interactivity is elevated to a new level. It works like a video, where you can fast-forward and rewind at variable speeds, and rotate and zoom at any time. This was particularly helpful when it came down to tiny little details like determining which of two available tabs I should lay down first.

Along with folding and connecting tabs, you also have to place an assortment of reflective pieces of tape in specific places so that the right Joy-Con's camera can recognize it. This is the most tedious part of building, but I appreciate how it shows exactly how each piece of the total build works.

Beyond the step-by-step instructions, you have access to a series of conversations with characters created for Labo. They walk you through how everything works in more detail, talking you through troubleshooting topics and helping you decorate the Labo creations without warping the cardboard. These chats are entertaining and well-written, and do a good job teaching the player more about Labo.

The software accompanying each Toy-Con ranges from solid entertainment to surprisingly versatile. The fishing and racing games don’t have a lot of depth, but they are enjoyable and work well with the Labo accessories. The house is a virtual pet and minigame collection, and it also serves as a bizarre showcase of what the Switch can do by incorporating the Joy-Cons’ motion controls, IR camera, and the Switch’s screen into games. You can, for example, use one of your created tools as a tap to fill up the house with water, and then tilt and shake the house to see the water react realistically.

The piano is easily the most interesting and versatile tool in the Variety Pack. You can create and record music with a surprising amount of options. It also cooperates with the fishing game by letting you insert shapes you’ve cut from paper or cardboard into a slot on the top, which can be scanned to create fish. Those created fish can then be stored in your aquarium alongside the other fish you’ve caught. The piano demanded the majority of my attention based on its music and recording applications, and it is also the most impressive build of all the creations.

The durability of Labo is an important question, and though I was impressed by the stability of each of the creations, they are not indestructible. A footfall can easily demolish a Toy-Con. But Labo holds up well through regular play, and it can even withstand a few frustrated tosses of the fishing pole by a six-year-old set on catching a bigger fish than her dad.

Included with both Labo kits is the Labo Garage. With the Garage, players can manipulate all functions of the Switch and the Joy-Con controllers. You can make things happen on the screen or use it to control the right Joy-Con’s IR camera, motion capabilities, and HD rumble functions. The visual programming language is easy to understand, and I was able to make some things that were exciting. For a stupid-but-entertaining example, I programmed the piano so that when I shook it, it would meow like a cat. At the time of this writing, Labo has only been out for a week, but players are already coming up with fascinating applications using the Garage tools, and those creations will only get more interesting and detailed as people spend more time with the Garage.
Grade: B

Labo Robot Kit
The Robot Kit offers many of the same elements that make the Labo Variety Kit an attractive acquisition. The building is fun, the step-by-step guides and tutorials are equally well-done, and the full Labo Garage suite is included.

Unfortunately, the Robot Kit is the inferior of the two Labo options. Following the directions and folding it all together is enjoyable, but the final result is underwhelming. With the Variety Kit you are building recognizable things – a piano, a fishing rod – but here your final result is basically a box. The innards offer some impressive engineering, but it’s still just a box with straps and strings hanging out of it.

The Robot Kit also offers a more traditional video game. You wear the box like a backpack and attach the strings to your feet and hands using straps and handles (made from cardboard, naturally) and pull the strings to manipulate an on-screen robot as it tries to destroy a city. Suiting up for this activity is time-consuming, and surprisingly difficult to do without the assistance of a friend. The gameplay is reminiscent of early Kinect experiences in that you are using your body to play a game, and it just doesn’t work well. I had to pause often to reattach the foot string, and actions like raising one leg and one arm to leap into the air don’t work consistently.

On the creative side of things, in one mode you can set each arm and leg to output a different sound to create music by moving your body. However, even with the game docked on the TV with the sound turned up, I struggled to hear anything I was doing over the sound of cardboard and strings scraping together.

The Robot Kit is the strangest use of the cardboard, but the fun ends after completing the build. Including the Garage in both kits is the right call, but the Robot Kit is unquestionably the dud.
Grade: D

The Final Verdict
The time I enjoyed most with Labo was the time I spent building the Toy-Cons and using them to be creative. Making music with the piano was easy and rewarding, and experimenting with cutting out slips of paper to scan for fish creation lead to laughs with my child. Labo’s legacy and longevity rests in the hands of the Garage and what people do with its tools, but even just out of the box, without the intention to create something original, Labo offers an undeniably novel and enjoyable experience that feels more like a toy than a video game.

UPS Brings Their A-Game To Labo Accessories

Labo, Nintendo's cardboard-based slot-and-switch package, has seemingly been a pretty big hit. Now the United Parcel Service is showing they're not one to be undone.

In a tweet today, UPS showed a video of them using cardboard to cut and assemble a travel case for all your Labo variety pack accessories. The Labo Toy-Con-tainer has wheels, a lock (for however much good that does), and slots for all of Labo's assembled devices.

You can find what we think of Labo right here in a time-lapse video or on The GI Show.
