Final Fantasy VII, Tomb Raider, And Others Inducted To World Video Game Hall Of Fame

The Video Game Hall of Fame, run by The Strong Museum in Rochester, New York, has announced that Final Fantasy VII, Tomb Raider, John Madden Football, and Spacewar are being honored with inductions to the museum.

Spacewar is by far the oldest game on the list, coming out in 1962. The game was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a PDP-1 minicomputer. The title has the distinction of all the inductees of not being a commercial product, but rather an experimental and foundational step for creating and designing interactive entertainment.

John Madden Football is being inducted for its 1990 release on Sega Genesis after being rebooted from the earlier PC title. The game is being inducted for its major success and the way it revolutionized iterative titles over a large amount of time.

Tomb Raider's 1996 changed the way people played action adventure titles and helped define how developers used 3D space in game development.

Final Fantasy VII's 1997 release changed the way cinematic games were developed. The title brought Japanese RPGs mainstream, selling ten million copies up from the previous game's three million. Characters from the game are commonly recognized and well-loved even today.

When a game is inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, it is placed on permanent display on The Strong Museum's second floor. A full list of games in the hall of fame can be found here.

Our Take
It speaks volumes that three of the games being inducted have either new titles or remakes in development currently.
