Minecraft's Aquatic Update Will Be Last Big One On Legacy Platforms

Microsoft unveiled Minecraft's upcoming Aquatic Update at last year's Minecon event, showing off the expansion's new undersea biomes, creatures (dolphins!), and tools. It's still on track for a spring release, but it comes with a caveat: According to Microsoft, it's the last major update for platforms that aren't running on the game's Java Edition or Bedrock Engine.

The update will first come to Xbox One, Switch (after a free update), Windows 10, and mobile. After that, it's coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and the Vita. "With the exception of PlayStation 4 Edition, this will mark the last big effort to keep those editions up to date with our newer versions of the game," reads a post on the official Minecraft site. According to the post, those legacy platforms only comprise five percent of active players, which prompted the studio to focus on where the current player base is.
