Bungie dove into the specifics of the new mode coming in Destiny 2's Warmind expansion, Warmind, in video mode, revealing a few new details.
Escalation Protocol, as previously detailed, is a wave-based mode that takes place on Mars, the expansion's locale. As an answer to player complaints didn't have difficult, repeatable activities, Escalation Protocol was built to be tough. "Every playtest we got into, we went into it thinking 'if we can beat this, it's probably still too easy," says Jacob Benton, the mode's design lead. To encourage players to tackle something this hard, Escalation Protocol has exclusive rewards and weapons to chase, some of which you can see in the video itself.
Players must take on seven waves of increasingly difficult Hive enemies, including a few new enemy types. There are now Knights which carry shields, making it harder for groups to immediately pin them down and remove them as a threat. New sniper enemies round out the Hive's armies by forcing players to take on threats from afar. There are also boss waves to tackle, as well as a wave that includes a rift with a Knight which drops its sword for players to use, giving players a sense of catharsis after all the shooting (while still providing a challenge).
It's also a bit more of a social activity, taking up most of the space in the new Mars area, and seamlessly integrating with public events that take place on Mars and letting random players connect with groups in the public zone.
