PUBG On Xbox One Gets New Modes And Maps

Forget Fortnite, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is getting some updates for Xbox One and they look great. During Microsoft's E3 2018 press conference, we got a look at a few new maps and a new one-shot kill match called War Mode.

Many of these updates are features that have previously debuted on PC. For example, Sanhok is the game’s third map, which releases later this month on PC, but Xbox One fans will have acess to it later this summer. Finally, we got a sneak peak at a brand new winter map. Okay, you don't have to forget Fortnite, maybe we can love all games.

Forza Horizon 4

Forza Horizon is back, and for Forza Horizon 4 Playground Games is expanding the game's open world promise to encompass the length and breadth of Britain – adding more co-op play and dynamic seasons, weather, and time of day.

The stage demo of the game showed co-op play with real players in real-time, including the ability to race within the world and team up for co-op events like Forzathon Live with shared challenges and big rewards. This appears to bring together previously separate co-op experiences in the last Forza Horizon 3 into one experience.

Furthering the shared world component, the game's dynamic seasons and weather are experienced by all players at the same time, and fall's golden leaves blowing past your windshield give way to iced over lakes that allow gamers to reach new areas of the map.

Forza Horizon 4 comes out on October 2 on Xbox One and Windows 10, and will be available in the Xbox Gamepass program.

New Microsoft Internal Studio Announced, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory, Playground Games, Compulsion Games Acquired

During Microsoft's E3 conference, the Xbox chief Phil Spencer announced a number of major studios coming under Microsoft's wing in the form of studio acquisitions and a brand new first party studio in Santa Monica.

Spencer introduced The Initiative, a first party studio called The Initiative. The studio was leaked through job listings last month and is Microsoft's major new internal developer, headed by ex-Crystal Dynamics head Darrell Gallagher. Microsoft isn't ready to show what they're working on yet, but did hint it would be narrative-based.

Microsoft also announced another of major new acquisitions. Undead Labs, the developers behind the State of Decay games, have officially joined Microsoft's fold after two de facto exclusives. Ninja Theory, who developed DmC: Devil May Cry and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, are also joining the Microsoft family.

Playground Games, Forza's developer, had long been suspected to be acquired by Microsoft and Spencer made the confirmation today. Finally, Compulsion Games, the developers behind the anticipated We Happy Few is now a Microsoft first party.

Metro Exodus Coming February 2019

Life is Strange: The Amazing Adventures Of Captain Spirit Focuses On A Young Boy

Microsoft showed off a slice of the next Life is Strange game during the company's E3 2018 press conference. Life is Strange: The Amazing Adventures of Captain Spirit is coming in a few weeks, and it'll be available as a free download, to boot.

The game features a young boy playing with superhero toys and doing his best to approximate having his own super abilities (using a firecracker in a snowman). He and his father appear to be dealing with the recent death of the boy's mother, though judging from the upbeat tone in the trailer and the presence of a high five, the pair seems to be working through it as a team.

The game is being developed by Dontnod and published by Square Enix. This one isn't a multi-episode arc; think of it as the Ground Zeroes to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Fortunately, the price is right; you'll be able to download it on June 26 at no cost.

Kingdom Hearts Comes To Xbox For The First Time

Kingdom Hearts 3 has been revealed to be coming to Xbox One at the Microsoft E3 press conference, along with the reveal of the Frozen Universe being added to the title. The trailer showcased many of the worlds, and characters and plenty of possible story hints for fans of the series.

The world of Frozen joins, Hercules, Monsters Inc. , Toy Story and more when the game releases Jan 29, 2019.

Todd Howard Reveals Additional Details About Fallout 76

Ahead of the company's E3 press conference this evening, Bethesda's Todd Howard took the stage at the Microsoft press briefing to tease a few new details about the recently revealed Fallout 76.

According to Howard, the game is four times the size of Fallout 4 and set in the hills of West Virginia. Players are the first to emerge into the untamed wasteland following the series' nuclear apocalypse and are tasked with rebuilding the region, and America as a whole.

We anticipate learning more about Fallout 76 tonight during Bethesda's media briefing. That event begins at 9:30 p.m. Eastern / 6:30 p.m. Pacific.

Ori Returns In The Will Of The Wisps

We’ve known for some time that Moon Studios has been working on a follow-up to Ori and the Blind Forest, but we haven't had many chances to see much of the game. That changed today at Microsoft's press briefing, where a good bit of new gameplay was shown off in a new trailer. The trailer shows off the same lush world that Ori first appeared in, but the cute little hero is now on a new adventure. In the trailer, we see Ori leaping through the forests, as well as flying on an owl companion.

You can watch the full video below.

Crackdown 3 Shows Off Its Explosive Muscle, Despite Delay

Although Microsoft announced earlier this week that Crackdown 3 would be pushed into 2019, its trailer still showed off distinctively Crackdown gameplay and the vocal talents of Terry Crews.

Lots of explosive weaponry, transforming vehicles, and superhuman agility were on display in the new ad. However, details were scarce; there was no reference to multiplayer, or the impressive destruction originally touted by the game.

Release for the Xbox exclusive is now February 2019, where it will compete with Days Gone, Kingdom Hearts III, and Anthem.

From Software Unveils Ninja Action Game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Last year during The Game Awards, From Software showcased a cryptic, bloody teaser for an upcoming game. The teaser ended with the phrase "Shadows Die Twice," leaving many to wonder if this was a preview or a sequel to Bloodborne or something new.  Today, we got our answer at Microsoft's E3 press conference, where From Software revealed  with a trailer that the game was called Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and focused on a ninja protecting a small child.

The combat seems heavily inspired by From Software's Souls series, but there also appear to be new features and an aesthetic that sets itself apart.

A beautiful, lush feudal-Japan setting steals the show – as does the unnamed main character's prosthetic arm. It functions much like the trick weapons from Bloodborne, with the main character grappling to various places and using an axe attachment to chop through enemies' defenses.

Verticality and stealth also seem to play a huge role, with our character using his grappling hook to plan out tactical options and hunt foes from the shadows. The brief trailer also showcased a massive snake enemy that our hero had to evade on a bridge.

We learned no details about the hero's name or the child he's protecting. We imagine more details about Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice  will follow during the course of E3 and will provide them when they do show up, so check back in the near future for more information about From Software's latest.

Master Chief Returns As Microsoft Announces Halo Infinite

You might have thought he was done, but Master Chief will return in Halo Infinite – really sorry if you are a fan of the number six.

Developed by 343 Industries, Halo Infinite will use brand new tech called the Slipspace Engine. The brief tease showed off what looked like a new Halo ring and a sea of full of interesting creatures.

Executive President of Gaming at MicrosoftPhil Spencer called it Master Chief’s greatest adventure, so I guess all of those other adventures weren’t really as good as you thought.

NBA Live 19 Drops September 7, Touts Improved Animations

Last year, EA Sports finally put its troubled NBA Live franchise on a promising trajectory. Though its ancillary modes still had many shortcomings and the on-court play was a little stiff, the new centerpiece The One mode showed this game may finally be making a turnaround.

EA Sports is doubling down on The One with NBA Live 19, putting players in the shoes of a promising high school prospect who hopes to write his own legacy on the court. This year, The One is a globe-trotting affair, taking players to new street courts in France, Brazil, and the Philippines.

On the court, EA Sports says the new Real Player Motion technology should result in smoother gameplay, integrating thousands of new animations into the action.

The free NBA Live 19 demo releases on August 24 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The First Trial starts on September 3 on Xbox One, and final release drops for both consoles on September 7.

Madden NFL 19 Opens Up The Playbook At EA Play

Electronic Arts kicked off E3 2018 with its EA Play event, and naturally Madden NFL 19 was there.

This year's title (out August 10) hits all the familiar notes – including the return of Longshot story mode – but many fans will be heartened by developer EA Tiburon's stated emphasis on gameplay and the long-standing Franchise mode.

Madden is integrating what it calls Real Player Motion (RPM) tech already used in FIFA 18 and UFC 3 into Madden 19 for better player movement. Using the right analog stick gamers can navigate the crowded offensive line as well as make open-field, change-of-direction moves. Defensive players also have a counter-move to help them stay competitive.

The heart of this year's additions to Franchise mode, which hasn't received major changes in a while, is a new player progression system based on a team's offensive and defensive schemes. Which schemes you run determine which positional archetypes are the best fits for those schemes, with your players earning and applying skill points into archetype buckets that boost players’ ratings. Thus, some players will perform better on your team depending on the schemes (which can be changed), and otherwise-fringe players can progress and contribute in a scheme catering to their talents.

The mode is also getting fan-requested custom draft classes that users can edit, share, and import with each other.

Devin Wade and Colt Cruise are back in a new Longshot story entitled Homecoming. Devin is navigating life in the NFL while Colt looks like he's returned to Mathis. Both characters are playable this time around, with the mode featuring more regular Madden gameplay and NFL flavor through interactions with real players in the league.

Longshot feeds into Franchise mode and Madden Ultimate Team, the latter of which introduces Solo Battles vs. CPU-controlled user teams for weekly rewards (like FIFA’s Squad Battles), a new player leveling system via training, and more. For additional info on the additions for Madden 19’s Ultimate Team mode, check out this previous Sports Desk entry. For more on franchise mode, check out this preview.

Finally, EA has announced that Madden 19 will be on PC – returning to the platform for the first time since Madden NFL 08.

EA Reveals Command & Conquer Rivals For Mobile

Taking place on a smaller screen than other announcements, EA announced its new competitive mobile game, Command & Conquer Rivals.

The gameplay centers on destroying the opponent's base by controlling a majority of tiles on the field and seizing missiles. EA showed a full match of the game with the production value of an esports match.

The game will be available on both iOS and Android, with a pre-alpha demo available for Android available right now.

EA Announces Sea Of Solitude

At the EA Play press conference, EA announced Sea Of Solitude, from by Berlin-based developer Jo-Mei Games. The title is part of EA Originals, the same line of games that produced last year's A Way Out.

In Sea Of Solitude, you play as Kay, a young girl transformed into a monster by her loneliness. Your goal is to figure out how this transformation occurred and how to fix it. The game takes place in a flooded world filled with other creatures created by loneliness.

Sea Of Solitude is set to release in early 2019.

Finding The Right Scheme

EA Announces Origin Access Premier

At today’s EA Play press conference, CEO Andrew Wilson took to the stage to reveal the impending arrival of Origin Access Premier. The new service promises to allow PC players to pay a single subscription fee and play new EA games as they release along with a library of legacy titles.

The service sounds similar to what Microsoft has recently been exploring with Xbox Games Pass.

The service will go live later this year, and include games like Anthem, Battlefield V, Madden NFL 19, and FIFA 19.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Gets New Content From The Clone Wars

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is getting a plethora of new modes this summer, as well as finally getting a major batch of prequel content in the future.

The game is getting a new squad system that will allow you to team up and play more easily with your friends, as well as a new dogfight mode designed around hero ships. Another new mode will be added to the multiplayer sandbox, with players taking command posts and attacking capital ships, which may hint at land to space battles.

Finally, the game is getting four new heroes, with Obi Wan and Anakin making up the heroes and General Grevious and Count Dooku making up the villains. Their battles will take place on the newly added Geonosis, which is touted as the biggest Battlefront map to date.

No concrete info was given on the exact number of maps or a release date.

Battlefield V Will Have A Battle Royale Mode And More

DICE kicked off EA’s E3 2018 press conference with a major announcement: Battlefield V will sport its own take on the uber-popular battle royale genre.

DICE didn’t share any other details about Battlefield V’s battle royale mode, other than to say that it will feature the same focus on teamplay, destruction, and vehicles that the series is known for, and that it will share more later this year.

The rest of EA's Battlefield V demo covered the same ground as its earlier reveal, including greater destruction (including the ability for tanks to bulldoze straight through buildings), and capturing World War II through the eyes of individual soldiers in the returning War Stories mode. DICE said it will be giving players a more in-depth look at at the first such War Story during Microsoft’s Xbox Briefing tomorrow. DICE also once again reiterated that Battlefield V will feature absolutely no lootboxes or premium passes, and that “everyday will bring something new” to the game.

Stay tuned to gameinformer.com for more on Battlefield V, including hands-on impressions.

Yarny Meets A Blue Friend For Unravel Two And It's Out Now

Yarny, the star of 2016's Unravel, is returning for a sequel with Unravel 2.

The game's trailer shows Yarny struggling at sea in a violent storm, and severing his yarn connection.

After that happens, Yarny discovers a being just like it, except it's blue (Blarny?). The game is always played with two characters on-screen, whether you're playing co-op or by yourself. When playing along, you can carry the second character through the environment which is required for the more action-packed sequence, of which there will be more.

EA showed the game be played both ways – alone and with a drop-in-drop-out friend. The game is available immediately.

FIFA 19 Adds Champions League & Continues The Journey

Today at Electronic Arts' EA Play E3 event the company revealed FIFA 19 and confirmed that it has acquired the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Super Cup licenses for the soccer franchise.

The licenses won't just be featured in standalone tournaments, but instead be threaded throughout the game (which again features recent Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo on the cover), from career mode to Ultimate Team to The Journey story mode. The Journey: Champions (only on PS4, Xbox One, and PC), features Alex Hunter in his final story as he chases Champions League glory.

On the pitch, this year's game alters the ways players receive and strike the ball, win 50/50 battles for loose balls, and setup their squad's tactics.

Apart from the standard version, the game also comes in the Champions Edition and Ultimate Edition formats. Pre-order the Champions Edition (available for all systems) and get three-days early access, Ronaldo and Neymar Jr. FUT loan items, 20 Jumbo Premium Gold FUT packs, and more. The Ultimate Edition (a digital-only edition not available for Switch), meanwhile, comes with 40 Jumbo Premium Gold FUT packs, among other goodies.

Latest Trailer Shows Off Locales And Beautiful Art

Indivisible, the crowdfunded turn-based RPG from the developers of Skull Girls, has a new trailer just ahead of E3 showing off the game's multiple environments.

Main character Ajna runs, jumps (and walljumps), and fights through a number of cool locales like Ashwat Forest, the cold and isolated Mount Sumeru, the dangerous Fortress Vimana, and more. The trailer shows off the gorgeous art and interesting battle system, as well.

Indivisible was originally scheduled for this year but was delayed to the first half of 2019. A new backer beta is also out today, but for everyone else, you should hopefully be able to get your hands on Indivisible next year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.

Cyberpunk Card Game Android: Netrunner Is Shutting Down

A complex and tech-focused card game, Android: Netrunner made our Top Ten Tabletop Games list back in 2012. Now, after six years of support from Fantasy Flight Games, the studio has announced that it will stop selling all Netrunner-related merchandise and hosting events based around the game.

In a blog on its site, Fantasy Flight Games explained that its "current licensing term is coming to an end," but that the Android universe would continue in the future.

The two-player game was less approachable than juggernauts like Magic: The Gathering, but had variety and options to make up for that. In each game, one person was the head of a futuristic corporation and the other played a hacker trying to infiltrate the company's systems.

While disappointing, the nature of tabletop games means that players can continue enjoying matches as long as they've got cards and friends to play with.

Hot On The Heels Of Vampyr, Dontnod Announces Twin Mirror

In the flurry of leaks and rumors prior to E3, it's refreshing to see a game intentionally announced with a standard trailer. Such is the case with Twin Mirror, a new title from Vampyr and Life is Strange developer Dontnod.

In the trailer, a man begrudgingly returns to a small town after the death of a journalist and experiences all sort of supernatural events. It's immediately reminiscent of Stephen King or Alan Wake, the intimate setting lending itself to uneasy circumstances. The title of the game, Twin Mirror, is suggestive of another surreal small-town story: Twin Peaks.

The video offers few details on gameplay, but the glimpses of combat suggest that the game will be action-focused, similar to Vampyr or Remember Me rather than Life is Strange.

Release for PC, PS4, and Xbox One is planned in 2019.

Devolver Digital Teasing Something Metal Wolf Chaos-Related

Metal Wolf Chaos is one of gaming's most perplexing titles. Released in Japan in 2004, the Xbox exclusive cast you as the President of the United States, who battles evildoers with his giant mechanized suit of power armor when he's not busy leading the free world.

The game was also developed by From Software years before the company released a little title called Demon's Souls, so naturally Western gamers have been curious about the game for a while now. However, despite From's leap to fame with Souls and the fact that the game's audio is already in english, Metal Wolf Chaos has never been released in the West.

That might soon change.

Back in 2016, Devolver Digital tweeted out that the company had a desire to localize the cult classic:

Today the company tweeted a logo that looks concpicuously like the one in Metal Wolf Chaos:

Devolver hasn't offered anymore details on what this is: a sequel, a remaster, or a port. However, the company's E3 showcase is on Sunday, so chances are we might find out more then.

See Wonder Boy's Spiritual Successor In New Trailer

FDG Entertainment and Game Atelier are releasing a new game in the style of an old cult classic. Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is being developed with help from Ryuichi Nishizawa, creator of the Wonder Boy in Monster World series. And now you can see the game in action in this all-new trailer.

The core gameplay of a morphing hero remains intact, though it looks leagues better than its 8-bit predecessors. As you can see in the trailer, it offers around 15 hours of platform-hopping and exploration. Look for it on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch this summer.

If you haven't played any of the Wonder Boy games before, you're in luck. Last year, DotEmu and Lizardcube remade Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, and it's available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Switch.

Hitman 2 Revealed, Coming November

As previously discovered, WB Games' mystery reveal title today turned out to be Hitman 2. WB is partnering with IO Interactive for a sequel to the episodic Hitman title previously published by Square Enix.

The new title, unlike its piecemeal predecessor, will be launching as a single game on November 13 this year on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The CG teaser, which you can find below, shows Agent 47 taking down a target in a F1 race through different methods, emphasizing the variability of assassinating targets.

Aside from the Miami F1 race, WB also mentions that the game includes "drenched streets to dark and dangerous rainforests" as part of its international tour. Agent 47 is tasked with unraveling the militia and identity of the mysterious Shadow Client introduced in the previous title.

Hitman 2 also introduces Sniper mode, a cooperative or single-player mode that allows players to work together to assassinate a target. You can check out the trailer explaining the new mode below.

Hitman 2 launches on November 13 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It is likely we will hear more about the game at E3.

Avalanche Studios Announces New Co-op Shooter

Avalanche Studios brought us Just Cause and Mad Max, and now it's ready for its next big thing. Today, the studio announced a new project called Generation Zero, an open-world shooter set in an alternate history of 1980's Sweden. You take on the role of a local fighting against an invasion of machines in the rural Swedish countryside.  Players can play solo or have three friends join in for seamless four-player co-op.

Enemies in the world will be persistent and the damage you inflict will stay on them, whether you remove limbs or armor. If an enemy returns an hour or weeks later, those battle scars will still be visible.

Players can share loot, revive teammates and use guerrilla tactics to fight back and eventually unravel the mystery behind the machine invasion. The huge world is rendered with the Apex engine, and will have a full day/night cycle, dynamic weather, simulated ballistics, complex A.I., and a 1980's soundtrack.

Rafael Nadal Cheats Mario Out Of A Well-Deserved Tennis Victory In New Trailer

In keeping with Nintendo's new favorite trend– placing Mario next to people with regular human proportions– comes a new trailer for Mario Tennis.

Cleverly released right in the middle of the French Open, the ad pits Mario against Rafael Nadal, one of the best tennis players in the world. Nadal ultimately takes the match on a highly debatable call by the ref.

This trailer doesn't add much beyond what we saw in the game's adventure mode recently, but it does show off how multiple Switches can be set up to play a single multiplayer match. It also teases the ability to challenge a call (details on how this is done are unknown).

Mario Tennis Aces launches on June 22.

New S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-Inspired FPS Promises A Radioactive Battle Royale With Wolves

Vostok Games isn't the first developer to jump on the battle royale bandwagon, but it might be the first to feature irradiated wolves alongside the standard 100 players.

Fear the Wolves takes place among the wastes of Chernobyl, adding S.T.A.L.K.E.R. staples like hallucinations to the now-classic battle royale formula. Players will parachute into the radioactive wastes with only a fireaxe to help them scavenge the surrounding world for better gear.

Fear the Wolves adds a couple unique twists to the genre. To win, players have to rush for the evac chopper; it's the only ticket out of Chernobyl, and it's only got one spare seat. Vostok also said that the titular wolves are just "the first of our mutants to be revealed." Apparently, all sorts of wildlife will be present to throw a wrench in players' carefully laid plans.

Early access begins this summer on PC, with a planned console release further down the road.

Our Take

There's no lack of battle royale games to choose from, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. certainly has its hardcore fans. Provided the final game lives up to the presentation in this trailer, it'll be cool to have a more horror-themed brawl.

Hero Shooter Paladins Confirmed For Switch With Crossplay

Last week a leaked E3 banner sheet revealed that hero shooter Paladins was coming to the Switch, and developer Hi-Rez Studios has announced that this is indeed true.

The game can be played first through paid early access by buying the Founder's Pack at Nintendo's eShop on June 12, and later as a free-to-play title this summer.

The game features multiplayer crossplay with the Xbox One and runs at 60 frames per second.

The hero shooter space on the system looks to be burgeoning, if a recent eShop leak revealing Fortnite is to be believed.

Report: Crackdown 3 Delayed Into 2019

Kotaku is reporting that according to multiple sources Crackdown 3 has been hit with another delay – this time pushing the game into 2019.

The site says the news comes from "two people familiar with the game's release plans."

The game was originally supposed to come out in 2016, but it was moved to November 7 to coincide with the launch of the Xbox One X. In the fall of 2017, however, the game was pushed to spring 2018.

Just last week Amazon Spain canceled pre-orders for the title, which Microsoft said at the time was a mistake on Amazon's part.

Javy played Crackdown 3 last fall at Gamescom, and you can read his impressions here.

[Source: Kotaku

Our Take
I expect Microsoft to still show this game at E3 because the publisher simply doesn't have many first-party titles left to tout. Given lukewarm receptions like Javy's, however, so far the most damning thing about this game isn't the delays it's that it just doesn't sound that interesting.

Insomniac's Next VR Game Makes You A Robot On An Abandoned Planet

After teasing it recently, Insomniac fully revealed its new VR game, Stormland. In the game, you are a robot on a strange planet. In the trailer, you are a robot hard at work on a new planet, but are shot and left for dead by The Tempest. You wake up years (decades? Centuries?) later in order to repair yourself, figure out what happened to you, and take some revenge.

Insomniac is promising new ways to navigate in VR and says it is coming in 2019 exclusively for Oculus Rift.

Persona 3 and 5 Rhythm Games Coming West In 2019

We don't think it's overselling it to say that Persona's popularity has exploded since the remaster of Persona 4 hit the Vita back in 2012. Not only was the fifth game critically acclaimed, but 4 spun off into an enjoyable dancing game.

We knew that there were dancing games coming for Persona 3 and 5, but Atlus had remained tight-lipped about whether those two games would be coming west. The developer confirmed today that both games, Persona 3: Dancing In Moonlight and Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, would be coming west in 2019. The games will be coming to both PS4 and Vita, with a Atlus' European PR representative Sara Wellock confirming that the Vita version will be digital only:

The announcement arrived alongside two trailers, one for each game.

Tales Of Vesperia Anniversary Site Discovered, Remaster Hinted

Tales of Vesperia, the cel-shaded Tales of game that is often considered the best game in the series, might be getting a remaster soon, if the 10th anniversary website is any indication.

Gematsu reports discovery of the 10th anniversary site, which right now is password-locked and can't be accessed. They also go on to say that their sources have indicated a Tales of Vesperia remaster is on the way and should be announced at E3 2018. Gematsu did not indicate platforms, but considering the Tales Studio's stated preferences, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC are pretty likely bets.

Tales of Vesperia released in August 2008 worldwide as part of Microsoft's initiative to attract fans in Japan and fans of Japanese games. The game was ported to PlayStation 3 in Japan with new characters and content, but this version never released in America despite pleas from fans. The Tales series itself used to be close to yearly, but despite announcing a Tales title for the Switch, the series has been pretty quiet since 2016's Tales of Berseria.

[Source: Gematsu]

Our Take
Tales of Vesperia is one of my favorite JRPGs, but I got all the achievements back in the day, so a remaster would have to add some pretty significant new content for me.

Lumines Creator Puts A Trippy Twist On A Classic

Sony has announced a new game from Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the creator of Lumines and Rez, which puts a psychedelic spin on an old favorite. Tetris Effect features more than 30 stages, featuring unique visuals and sound effects that change as players progress through the game.

The game is named after the Tetris Effect, an actual phenomenon where subjects who were exposed to Tetris could visualize lingering Tetronimos long after stepping away from the game. Take a look at the clip below to see Tetris Effect (the game) in action, and imagine what kinds of lingering effects this one could have on players.

Tetris Effect is coming to PlayStation 4 this fall, with enhanced versions available on PS4 Pro and PlayStation VR.

Take A Look At Star Wars Battlefront II's Han Solo Season

Solo: A Star Wars Story is hanging on for dear life in the box office, but if you saw the film, and enjoyed it, you can relive the battle of Kessel in Star Wars Battlefront II when the new Han Solo season arrives on June 12. All of the new content is free on all systems.

Along with younger versions of Han Solo and Lando Calrissian, players can play as a slightly younger looking version of Chewbacca, complete with goggles. The new Kessel map takes players deep into the Coaxium Mine for games of Blast, Hero Showdown, Heroes vs. Villains, and Extraction.

And yes, Lando's pristine version of the Millennium Falcon can be used in the Starfighter avenues of play. L3-37 is included as the co-pilot.

Star Wars Battlefront II launched to troubles galore, but has received plenty of support from developer DICE in the months that have followed. Some of the big problems still persist, but players now have a wealth of content to explore.

The Final Season Of Telltale's Walking Dead Premieres In August

Telltale announced a few months back that The Walking Dead, the series that put the company on the map, would be drawing to a close with a final season that would be released in 2018. That season now has a release date, thanks to an exclusive trailer from IGN: August 14.

The trailer itself is brooding and features both Clem and AJ, the little boy Clem has taken care of for two seasons now, sitting over a river, going over the rules that keep people alive in this bleak universe. The trailer ends ominously, with Clem asking AJ to tell her what he needs to do if she gets bit.

You can watch the full trailer here.

Our Take
Is this a suggestion that Clem is on the way out? Her death would be a fitting exit for this series, given we've watched this little girl grow up and become a fierce survivor, but it'd also be nice just to have the barest traces of hope emerge. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

New Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Trailer Shows Miles Morales In Action

Filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are bringing Spider-Man back to theaters on December 14 in a new animated film called Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In the first full-length trailer for this beautifully animated project, we see an older Peter Parker mentoring Miles Morales, teaching him the ropes to become the next Spider-Man. The footage also shows us that more familiar faces are joining the Spider-Verse.

Miller and Lord are no strangers to animated films, making a name for themselves with the successful The Lego Movie. The film stars Shameik Moore as Miles, Jake Johnson as Peter, and also features the voice work of Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Liev Schreiber, and Luna Lauren Valez.

With the live-action Spider-Man swinging over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's nice to see Sony Pictures Entertainment doing something different with the Spider-Man license.

E3 2018 Predictions: Microsoft

Destiny 2: Forsaken Arrives September 4

Bungie held a livestream detailing the future of Destiny 2 today, headlined by the new Forsaken expansion launching this September.

With Forsaken, Bungie is hoping to cast off criticism of Destiny 2's first year by giving players new abilities and a new story and environments to use them in. Two new destinations littered with new weapons, armor, and enemies are there for guardians to explore and use their fresh new Supers on.

The Forsaken campaign focuses on the Prison of the Elders and the Reef, which has become a den of lawlessness after years of strife. The new story is being developed by High Moon Studios in conjunction with Bungie, which Activision is pitching as an entry point for new players, as well. Newcomers and veterans alike will be able to explore The Dreaming City as endgame content, which houses tough bosses and is the first area designed for endgame players.

The big new feature, however, is the introduction of Gambit, also an endgame activity that blends competitive and cooperative gameplay for a new mode. The hybrid 4v4 mode merges both PvE and PvP experiences by separating two teams of four within view of each other and forcing players to fight off waves of AI enemies. The enemies drop items called "Motes," which can be picked up by players to be taken back to the base and banked, sending more enemies to the opposing team. Players can only hold fifteen motes at a time, however, so going back to your base fairly often is part of the strategy. At some point, competing players can invade their rivals to throw a wrench into their works.

Bungie also introduced the Destiny 2 annual pass, essentially a paid season pass that nets players new content through next Summer. This includes the Black Armory update in Winter 2018, Joker's Wild in Spring 2019, and closing with Penumbra in Summer 2019. A price for the annual pass has not been disclosed, but as Forsaken is selling for $39.99 and a Forsaken bundle with the annual pass costs $69.99, it suggests that the annual pass will be $30.

Forsaken launches on September 4 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, with the PS4 version receiving an exclusive strike, a new exotic weapon, a new ship, and a gear set per class.

You Know You Want These Kylo Ren Sneakers

Judging by the box office receipts, most of you haven't seen Solo: A Star Wars Story yet. That means you have money to spare! A good way to spend those dollars is by wearing Kylo Ren's helmet on your feet. I know this sounds absurd, but seeing is believing, people!

These high-top sneakers are created by Po-Zu, and are slated to ship from the shoemaker's UK warehouse in August. How much will it cost to wear two Kylo Ren masks? Po-Zu is selling them for £69.00 (which translates to rough $92).

If you want to express your Star Wars love as much as possible, but don't want someone's head on your feet, Po-Zu is also selling a subdued Han Solo sneaker for the same price.

Red Faction: Guerrilla Remastered Gets A July Release Date

Red Faction: Guerrilla Remastered has gotten a launch trailer and release date. The original became a cult-classic among fans for the open world's incredible destructibility and creative freedom. The "Re-Mars-tered" edition adds native 4k support, a suite of graphical upgrades and all the previous DLC.

The remaster comes to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on July 3. Owners of the original on PC will get a free upgrade to the Re-Mars-tered edition.

The launch trailer adopts Idle Thumbs song "Space A**hole" which they made in 2009 for the game when it originally released and is a fun nod to the fans who made this game a success.

Our Take:
Red Faction: Guerrilla was an awesome game at launch, and one of my favorites that year.  It is hard to believe it has been almost a decade, but I have been looking forward to this re-release for a while. Hopefully, this is a precursor of a possible sequel, since Red Faction: Armaggedon was a disappointing change in pace from Guerrilla.

Fortnite Update Brings New Bouncer Trap To Battle Royale

Fortnite's newest update adds the bouncer trap to Battle Royale, which boosts players upward or in a direction.

The bouncer trap is essentially a combination of the vertical and horizontal jump pads that were previously in the game, according to Polygon.

The rare trap can be placed on floors and walls, and can spawn in stacks of three in treasure chests, supply drops, supply llamas, and floor loot.

The update also adds two new heroes, Diecast Jonsey and Chromium Ramirez, to Fortnite's Save The World mode, which will be available at the Save The World Event Store at 7:00 p.m. CT tomorrow, June 6.

Launch Trailer For Far Cry 5 DLC Adds Jungles, Abandons Cults

Keeping with the series tradition of outlandish DLC entirely separate from the main game, Far Cry 5 drops the Vietnam War-themed "Hours of Darkness" today.

Instead of clashing with a cult in Montana, players in the DLC must free prisoners and use era-appropriate weaponry in the jungles of Vietnam. It also features a new perk system, rewarding players for staying hidden and taking out enemies quietly.

The DLC is $11.99, or included with the season pass (as well as the recent re-release of Far Cry 3). You can read our review of Far Cry 5 here.

Our Take
Although not quite as wacky as Far Cry 3's Blood Dragon, this still looks like it could a fun diversion for those who want Far Cry gameplay in a new locale. Look for our impressions later this week.

Square Enix Devotes Division To Developing Switch Games

Square Enix is readying Octopath Traveler for launch as you read this, but that's not all it has up its sleeve for Switch. According to Tomoya Asano, division executive at Square Enix, more is on the way from the RPG juggernaut.

During my conversation with the team at Acquire and Square Enix about Octopath Traveler, Asano mentioned that the team became its own division in April. "Square Enix has decided that it wants to focus on original titles for the Switch," he says. "If Octopath Traveler does well and this is something that appeals to fans, we want to focus on Switch. Please pick up the Switch if you want to play games like Octopath Traveler."

There are several other titles we're currently working on for Switch.

When I ask Asano if games were already in development, or if Square Enix's future on the platform is contingent upon Octopath Traveler's success, he clarified his statement. "There are several other titles that we're currently working on for Switch," he says. "If you could just wait a bit longer, we'll work with Nintendo and announce them in the future."

No timetable was given for these future announcements, but it certainly seems as though Square Enix is all in on Nintendo's latest platform. With both Square Enix and Nintendo holding their own streamed presentations in the lead up to E3 next week, it's entirely possible that we'll see one or more of these projects announced, but nothing is confirmed as of now.

Check Out The First Teaser Trailer For Bumblebee

Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena star in Bumblebee, a Transformers prequel film set in the year 1987. Directed by Travis Knight with a screenplay penned by Christina Hodson, Bumblebee releases in theaters on December 21.

The teaser trailer doesn't provide much story setup, but we do see Bumblebee's original look is closer in design to his G1 cartoon roots.

Nostalgia Fighter Pocket Rumble Hitting Switch A Year After Target Date

The Neo Geo Pocket Color-inspired fighting game, Pocket Rumble, is finally hitting a Switch over an entire year after its intended release date.

Originally announced around the Switch presentation that first revealed the system, Pocket Rumble was intended to come around the console's launch in March. It's been a lot of radio silence and notes of assurance from publisher Chucklefish since then, but the game is finally coming out on Nintendo's hybrid console before the end of July.

You can see the update from developer Cardboard Robot Games in this video uploaded to their YouTube channel below.

In the meantime, the Steam Early Access version of the game will get the bulk of the content as Cardboard Robot experiments with new things to add. That content will then get added to the Switch version at a later date. Additionally, Kickstarter backers of the game are getting free Switch keys as an apology for the long wait.

Blistering Action With Detailed Instructions

The Dillon games represent a rarity in Nintendo’s library. Its star, Dillon, lives in a world ravaged by aliens, and he takes many of his thematic cues from Mad Max: Fury Road. Dillon’s Dead-Heat Breakers opens with an 18-wheeler truck race across an apocalyptic desert, and he spends the rest of the story begrudgingly putting his life on the line for others without saying a single word. His trilogy stands apart from other 3DS (and Nintendo-published) games, but the game lacks confidence in the player, which leads to frustration alongside the moments of extreme speed and action.

Like the previous two Dillon games on 3DS, Dead-Heat Breakers’ genre is tricky to classify. It has elements of tower defense along with brawler combat, and it even includes some racing. The typical level begins with the player assigning hired helpers to man turrets on a large map. After that, the evil Grock aliens begin to descend and Dillon can roll at high speeds across the map to meet the enemy head on while the turrets help out. When Dillon encounters an enemy on the map, you are transported to a separate screen, a bit like an RPG, to engage in claw-to-claw brawler combat.

After you have thinned the enemy numbers, (and the timer has nearly expired) the bad guys convert to vehicles, and a high-speed chase ensues. This is where Dead-Heat Breakers shines the strongest. Chasing down enemies and slamming into them or jumping up in the air and swiping them with your claws as you speed along a track feels great. The large battle leading to each race is consistently intense thanks to the ever-present timer and fun-to-use combat controls. Dead-Heat Breakers abandons the touch-screen controls of previous two games, and it gives you far more control over the fight.

In this story, Dillon and his squirrel pal Russ work to help an animal version of your Mii. Aliens have covered your town with a giant impenetrable bubble, and Russ has agreed to build you a massive weapon to break through – as long as you collect materials from neighboring towns who also need help pushing back against the alien threat. Making your way through the game and watching the weapon be built piece by piece is rewarding, but the story does little to expand, even if the finale does deliver as an exciting action set piece.

Between these battles, you can play minigames (like forgettable-but-profitable time-trial races) to raise funds to hire your helpers. You can also sort trash or play a shooter at an arcade. To my surprise, the best minigame is the one where you run a store. In the morning, you select a few items to sell, neatly arrange them on a shelf, and then ring up each customer at checkout. Helping customers and generally simulating the retail experience is supremely satisfying. You only have time for a certain number of minigames each day, but I would always beeline to the store every morning.

The mechanics of the minigames and the core action sequences are satisfying, but Dead-Heat Breakers is brought down tremendously by how time-consuming it is to instigate every task. For example, the helpers you need to hire all sit around a hotel lobby waiting for you to approach them. They are pulled from your friends and Mii lists, which makes the early hiring process slightly more emotional than just statistical comparisons, but it doesn’t take long to build a large enough bank that you will just hire everyone. It ends up being an uninteresting and time-consuming barrier to get to the action when you need to click through 10 conversations with characters you’ve already spoken to for previous missions.

Every battle also includes new enemies, which is great for mixing up the action, but it comes at the cost of hearing Russ talk with each town’s leaders at length about the new enemy types with dialogue that creeps across the screen without the option to speed it up. The information they surface could easily be figured out just by encountering the new enemy types in the field. It means the barrier to every battle is an overlong spoken tutorial that only gets more and more frustrating with each conversation.

You are also occasionally required to replay levels to get necessary resources you may have missed the first time. Mercifully, you can skip the Russ dialogue in these situations, but you still must go through the hiring process, and replaying a scenario you already completed is always a headache. I had to play the penultimate level three times in a row to unlock the final battle, and that sucked.

For all my frustration with unwelcome tutorials before every level, slow speech, having to replay levels, and hiring helpers, I enjoyed the core action and running my store. The muck you must wade through before you get to the action is unavoidable, but when you do finally get through, it’s compelling. Speeding around the levels as Dillon, slamming into enemies and pulling off last-second saves as animal versions of my friends and family cheer me on is exhilarating.

WB Hinting At June 7 Game Reveal, Likely Hitman (Update: Logo Found)

Update: Not that it is a galloping shock to anyone, but the WB games official website uploaded a file titled "hitman-logo.png" and is just a logo saying "Hitman 2," courtesy of ResetEra.

The original story is as follows:

With E3 being a frenzy competing for media attention, some publishers have taken to getting ahead of the event with announcements the week before. This seems to include Warner Bros., which is teasing a reveal in 72 hours – and likely not-so-coincidentally, so is IO Interactive's Hitman account.

The tease comes from WB Games' Twitter account, which has started a countdown for Thursday at 10:00 AM. The video clip included shows what appears to be a F1 pit crew and someone suiting up in the pit crew uniform.

The 72 hour timeframe, whether by coincidence or intention, is also the window for elusive targets in Hitman Season 1. WB Games' tweet was followed up by a tweet from IO Interactive's Hitman account, saying the profiles have been uploaded. The video clip mentions that access has been denied until June 7.

After parting ways with Square Enix following the conclusion of the first season of the new Hitman, IO retained the rights to the IP and the game and eventually announced a partnership with Warner Bros. for a Game of the Year edition of the first season and future projects. All signs are pointing to a Hitman reveal coming later this week.

Our Take
I finished Hitman season 1 earlier this year and loved it. I can't wait for a new season, hopefully it gets the time and budget it needs to blow the first season out of the water.

Sony Leads Up To E3 With Daily Announcements

Sony is having a very non-traditional E3 show this year and is continuing breaking traditions by not having a pre-show with smaller announcements and instead spreading those out through the week leading up to the show.

The PlayStation Blog revealed today that the announcements start on June 6 and continue until the day before Sony's presentation by ending on Sunday June 10 at 8:00 AM PT each day. The blog also gave us a few hints over what they might be revealing.

  • Wednesday June 6: New PS4 game with PlayStation VR Support
  • Thursday June 7: Release date for Sony Worldwide Studios title
  • Friday June 8: New PS4 game
  • Saturday June 9: New PSVR game
  • Sunday June 10: A PSVR port of an eagerly anticipated game.

The release date could be a number of different titles, but Sony Worldwide Studios encompasses Sony Bend, which is working on Days Gone; Media Molecule, which is working on Dreams; Polyphony, which is working on Gran Turismo; Sucker Punch, which is working on Ghosts of Tsushima; or the most likely candidate, PixelOpus, which is working on Concrete Genie.

What are your guesses on the other titles?

Our Take
I think ditching the preshow to just roll the news out over the week is a far better idea. Hopefully nothing falls through the cracks in the process, though.

Destiny 2: Forsaken Is The Next Big Expansion

Bungie has officially teased out the name of the next major piece of Destiny 2 content: Forsaken. The expansion is rumored to be something more akin to the size and scope of The Taken King, and will add a whole new enemy faction along with a campaign, strikes, a new raid and more.

Based on the quick teaser, the expansion looks to return to The Reef, the home of the Awoken in the first game. We never found out what happened to the Awoken Queen and her people after the battle with Oryx, so it should fill gaps in the story as well as provide an interesting new location.

The reveal will take place tomorrow, June 5 at 9am pacific/12pm Eastern on Bungie's youtube page

Our Take:
Destiny 2 has had a rocky first year, but it was still a great game with a much better foundation than the original.  Unfortunately, the support for the first game was much more comprehensive and clear with fans, and is is frustrating to see Bungie make the same mistakes all over again.  Hopefully this will be the last time we have to wait for a major expansion, a year out, to bring fans back. Nonetheless, I am incredibly excited to see what they bring to the table with Forsaken, as The Taken King was an amazing expansion that changed the original and I hope this one follows the same path.

Wreck-It Ralph Sequel Trailer Goes Online

The newest trailer for Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet has been released and it is a fairly aggressive Disney commercial.

While the first Wreck-It Ralph was a Who Framed Roger Rabbit-esque melting pot of video game references and characters, the sequel is eschewing those licenses for a story of properties owned by Disney and general jokes about the internet. It is like The Emoji Movie but probably way better.

You can catch the new trailer below.

I am admittedly a bit disappointed, simply because a sequel to the first movie's video game focus could probably expand it to include a lot more cool references, but I am guessing that's a lot harder than just using your own properties. Hopefully they lean into things like Marvel and Star Wars pretty well. That said, I am not sure why Disney princesses live on the internet.

Ralph Breaks the Internet is going to hit theaters on Thanksgiving.

E3 2018 Predictions: Nintendo

For the past two years, Nintendo has chosen to focus its E3 presence toward singular games. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild commandeered 2016 in a huge way and Super Mario Odyssey defined the Nintendo booth in 2017. The smart money is on Super Smash Bros. for 2018, but with the Switch's continued success, we're thinking we'll be seeing a whole lot more than just Nintendo games at its booth and during its Direct presentation.

As we have done in years past, we have placed our predictions on a scale of Sure Bet, 50/50, and Long Shot.

Super Smash Bros. Isn’t A Port… But It Looks Like One
The moment the dust had cleared after the Switch's announcement, the first question on everyone's minds (after the confirmation that a new Zelda and a new Mario were on the way) was, "What about Smash Bros.?" We all assumed, and frankly would have been satisfied with a port of the excellent Wii U version of Super Smash Bros., but when the game was finally confirmed in March, we weren't sure what to think. Is this the Wii U Super Smash Bros. with new characters like the inklings from Splatoon and a Breath of the Wild skin for Link? Or is it an entirely new game? Super Smash Bros. Wii U released in 2014, but on the Smash Bros. release timeline, four years is pretty quick for a new entry. The gap between Melee and Brawl was seven years and the gap between Brawl and Wii U was six. That being said, for reasons not yet totally clear, this seems like it's not going to be a port, but we also don't think it will feel dramatically different from the last entry – and we're okay with that. Keep an eye out later in the week for a feature where we break down which new characters we expect to see in the new game.

Probability: Sure Bet

Retro’s Rumored Star Fox Racer Surfaces
Last month, rumors began circulating that Retro's next project would be something surprising. Not a new Donkey Kong Country, Metroid Prime, or a new I.P., but rather a racing game based in the Star Fox universe. Rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt, but there is a lot of evidence surrounding this one, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was a commercial juggernaut on Switch. Of course Nintendo would want more racing games for its console that would fit in that same genre. We're betting we will see this thing – whatever it is – at E3.

Probability: Sure Bet

Amiibo Presence Reduced Significantly
We're not saying we won't see any amiibos at E3, either behind a glass case on the show floor or pictured during the Direct presentation, but we're thinking we will be seeing fewer of them. Retailers like Target no longer have dedicated sections devoted to the near-field communication baubles, and many of the characters (presumably) that will be in the new Smash Bros. already have amiibo figures connected to them.

Probability: Sure Bet

Metroid Prime 4 Gets A Trailer
One of the most exciting announcements with the least amount of information associated with it from E3 2017 was Metroid Prime 4. All we learned last year was it was coming and that Retro was not making it. That was it. This year, we're hoping to see a trailer. We're not even confident it will have gameplay in it, but it will at least give us an idea of the game's art direction and story.

Probability: Sure Bet

Pictured: Fire Emblem Warriors

Fire Emblem Switch Gets A Trailer, But It’s Still Far Away
Another one of Nintendo's patented no detail announcements was a recent one that said, "Fire Emblem is coming to Switch... eventually!" We're thinking we will learn more about that game this year with a trailer, but its release date will be a ways out.

Probability: 50/50
