YouTube Launches 4k Streaming

YouTube videos have been viewable in 4K since 2010, but today YouTube expanded its 4k capabilities by launching 4k streaming options.

Tomorrow's Game Awards will be the first major streaming event to take advantage of the new streaming clarity on YouTube. On its blog announcing the update, YouTube is touting the quality of the 4k writing, "4K video isn’t just a little different from HD video; it’s a giant leap." The 4k streaming option also extends to 360 degree video.

Our Take
This doesn't affect me much as I haven't yet entered the world of 4k yet, but the (admittedly expensive) prospect of entering this new visual world is getting more enticing by the day.

The Medieval Lifestyle Simulator Life Is Feudal Enters Closed Beta Next Month

Life is Feudal is an upcoming MMO centered around living and surviving in the Medieval era, and it is entering closed beta soon.

The game features (or will feature, rather) terraforming, crafting, preset and modular building construction options, survival aspects, no-target physics-based combat, and a unique formation system. 1,000 players are going to be welcomed into the closed beta which begins on December 14. [Update] Niantic Opening Pokémon Go's Updated Nearby Feature For The Whole U.S.

Update: The updated Nearby features of Pokémon Go is coming to the whole United States and most of Europe.

On its blog announcing the expanded availability, Niantic wrote, "We will be expanding the Nearby Pokémon feature to the rest of the continental United States and large parts of Europe. We will continue to review the feedback submitted on our official social media accounts and in other channels and make changes if necessary."

San Francisco has been enjoying exclusivity on the upgraded Nearby and Sightings features of Pokémon Go – until now.

The feature, which shows off which Pokémon are close to which nearby PokéStops, is now available in states west of the Mississippi River (except Hawaii and Alaska) in America, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the western half of Ontario in Canada, and all of Australia.

In its post detailing the update, Niantic is continuing to refer to the feature as a test, and doesn't offer any hints regarding when the features will be universally available.

In other Pokémon Go news, the Thanksgiving bonus XP event has officially started, and more importantly, Ditto is now officially in the game.

You Can Get Assassin's Creed III For Free Next Month

Ubisoft has been giving away games since summer in celebration of its 30th anniversary, and is ending 2016 with an entry from its flagship franchise.

Interested gamers can pick up Assassin's Creed III on PC starting next Wednesday, December 7. You'll have to go through the publisher's Uplay service and be a Ubisoft Club member to get it, but both are free to sign up for – in fact, if you've played a Ubisoft game in the past couple years, you're probably already a member.

If you're not interested in AC III, you still have a little time to pick up a free copy of Far Cry Blood Dragon. Head here to check out the games.

RIP Cities: Skylines, Everyone Is Dead, Everything Turned To Ash

Scouts Reign Supreme In Battlefield 1's New Custom Game Mode

DICE launched a new custom game variant in Battlefield 1 today that puts scouts on the offensive.

The new game mode is called Line of Sight, and forces would-be snipers out of their comfort zone. The Rush-based variant limits players down to just two classes: scouts and medics. Scouts enjoy double bullet damage, which should turn most of the rifles the class uses into one-hit-kill weapons. As a result, medics better plan on packing their syringes if they want to keep their team up and running (towards the next objective).

DICE also reaffirmed that Battlefield 1's free Giant's Shadow map is on schedule for a December release, and that the first paid expansion will be hitting in March of next year. For more on the game, read Bertz' review, and get educated with his Idiot's Guide To Battlefield 1.

Ubisoft Outlines Second Year Of Rainbow Six Siege Content

Ubisoft has detailed the second year of content for Rainbow Six Siege that they confirmed a few weeks ago. From February 2017 to February 2018, Rainbow Six Siege will get eight new operators, new weapons, more cosmetic items, seasonal events, a full year of the Pro League, and four free maps that take place in Spain, Hong Kong, Poland, and South Korea.

There are multiple ways to get the Year 2 content. Current players can either buy the Year 2 Season Pass for $29.99 and get everything up front or earn it all via in-game credits. New players can buy the Complete Edition that comes with the base game, the Year 2 Season Pass, and the operators from the first season pass. The Complete Edition is available now on PC for $99.99 and will come to the Xbox One on December 6 and the PS4 at a later unannounced date.

Players can also buy the Year 2 Gold Edition now on PS4 and December 6 on PC and Xbox One for $79.99, which comes with the base game and the Year 2 content as it releases. Year 2 Season Pass owners get VIP status that yields early access for all eight operators, a 10-percent discount at the in-game shop, a 5-percent Renown boost, and two extra daily challenges.

Ubisoft is also phasing out the Year 1 Season Pass soon and rolling out the Legacy Operator Bundle. The Legacy Operator Bundle unlocks the operators from the first season and will be available in the in-game shop for 2400 credits.

Our Take
The Pro League and steady flow of free and paid content are great ways to breathe life into a game and keep its community entertained. This approach lets games live for long periods of time and is a key reason why some competitive games have such long tails.

Just as players put the finishing touches on their perfect cities, Paradox Interactive has added a new expansion to obliterate your virtual citizens. Cities: Skylines' new Natural Disasters DLC adds a variety of catastrophic events to the game, including earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and meteors.

An extra challenge mode has been added as well, pitting players against the worst doomsday scenarios, or edit their own to torture their friends with. It's not entirely one-sided though, as new features such as a radio broadcast system and various disaster countermeasures are part of the package as well.

City-building sims are easy to lose thousands of hours in already, but this extra add-on seems to be for the most masochistic of fans. It won't be long before we see people crying on streams about how their beautiful city was decimated by a combination tornado, earthquake, and flood disaster.

Ninja Theory Explains Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Delay In New Video

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is no longer going to hit its 2016 release window. Developer Ninja Theory has pushed the game to 2017, and detailed how they came to that decision in a new video update.

Product development lead Dominic Matthews stated that one of Ninja Theory's unannounced projects was canceled earlier this year, and that the fallout of that decision, "took time to sort out." Matthews also cites the studio's collaboration with Epic Games and others to "push the motion capture technology forward for the whole video games industry" as another reason for the setback.

Matthews also admits that Hellblade's development progress just hasn't gone as fast as they would have liked, but that being independent gives them the freedom to decide what happens with their game.

"One of the reasons we are creating Hellblade independently is because it puts decisions in our hands," states Matthews. "Rushing the game out for release or compromising on quality is not something we are willing to entertain."

Matthews also mentions that they don't currently have a specific release date in 2017, but they will announce it when they do.

Our Take
Ninja Theory's transparency and honesty with Hellblade has been fascinating. Developers rarely share their development process, much less the specific reasons behind delays. It's a bit like that Double Fine documentary Ben Hanson won't stop talking about. Seriously. It's like every day with that guy. Anyway, I'd love to see other developers continue this trend.

The Virtual Life – Becoming A Monster In Tyranny

Tyranny is a CRPG in the style of Baldur's Gate and Pillars of Eternity that has a novel concept: you play the bad guy. And we're not talking a mischievous cackling Snidely Whiplash huckster, either. No, you are a capital-B bad person constantly doing evil things to the denizens of a fantasy land. I sat down with fellow editor Matt Miller, who reviewed the title, to talk about playing a game that lets us play the evildoer in year filled with despair and chaos.

Javy: Heya Miller. So let’s be real here for a sec: This year has sucked. This year has sucked hard. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen dead. The environment continues to fall to pieces. Tumultuous events happening all over the world. Despair around every corner. Real breaking of the seals kind of stuff, in a way.

I’ve had kind of a weird relationship with games this year. Like, they’ve always been escapist devices to me ever since I was a kid, but 2016 was the year they straight up became coping mechanisms in a way that’s maybe a little unhealthy? Titanfall 2. Wolfenstein. No Man’s Sky. All great ways to push my own problems, and anxieties about the world around me to the side and just not deal with things head on.

But then we have Tyranny, and Tyranny is a capital-I interesting game to me in that even though it’s about as fantastical as you can get, its dark world and the game’s inclination to force you to always be...well, pretty evil is an interesting experience to play in what feels like a pretty bleak time for humanity.

You ended up reviewing the game for us. What did you think of it? What’s interesting about it to you?

Miller: Well, I share your sentiment about this year’s frustrations. I’m a pretty optimistic guy by nature, but some of the events of recent months have really tested the bounds of that optimism. I’m of the opinion that games have a powerful ability to act as a catharsis for our feelings, including an outlet for aggression, a channel for our need to compete, and sometimes just as a way to step back from the frustrations of day-to-day life and inhabit a different mindspace for a while.

With those thoughts in mind, Tyranny arrived at an unusual time. No matter your take on the recent election here in the United States, in the forefront of everyone’s mind is the idea of leaders who might be acting in ethically questionable ways. Tyranny is a game that is fundamentally about enforcing and encouraging a corrupt and evil government, so it hits home for anyone whose mind has been considering the implications of power and corruption – whichever side of the political spectrum you happen to fall.

For me, Tyranny’s focus on corruption, manipulation, and strong-arming comes at a time when that’s not exactly what I’m looking for out of a gaming experience. But, at the same time, there’s no doubt that Tyranny is a solid and artful exploration of the concept of evil, and I can’t help but appreciate its approach to communicating about the nature of power.

You had a chance to explore the game as well, I believe. What was your experience like?

Javy: I came away with mixed feelings from my time with Tyranny. It was interesting; I actually got to chat with the dev team when they revealed the game, and one of the questions I asked was if there would be a “morally grey” path that, while not falling into lawful good or anything like that, would let players try to rise above the evil and they implied there would be that option.

However, most of the choices in Tyranny seem to fall between “be mildly evil” and “be incredibly evil,” and I just don’t know how I feel about that. It’s certainly a unique experience in the realm of games, especially when most games that let you be the bad guy often have a sense of humor (like Dungeon Keeper 2 or Overlord). However, it’s so somber and serious and out to make you be a bad person, there doesn’t seem to be a way to rise above it and man, I don’t know. I really feel like you’re holding out on the player by not offering them the opportunity to try and bring light into that world even if that attempt ends in failure.

Miller: Yeah, from a design perspective, the mostly evil choices in conversations and actions has an unusual effect. As I talked about in my review, I think there’s an unusual limitation on the sense of narrative freedom when you take one whole end of the moral spectrum out of the equation. If I’m playing a game with the choice to save an innocent, and then I brutally kill them instead, that instills a genuine sense that I’m playing an evil character. When that choice is taken away, and my only choice is to either kill him, or torture him, it lessens the impact of the choice for me.

Now, that said, I think Tyranny does some very interesting things to provide narrative agency in other ways, and I really appreciate that the game has so many branching paths even within the spectrum of mostly evil or barbaric choices. Do you know what I mean?

Javy: Oh yeah, for sure. Even though it restricts itself with that limited moral spectrum, it carves out that space and offers the player loads of narrative possibilities. The game’s opening, which has you making tactical choices on a battle map over a period of a few years during a war, is one of my favorite intros in a game in years because it literally shapes the game to come: the land, the factions, how people respond to you. It’s kind of astonishing at times. I loved how people would recall my actions during the war or how I had burned on faction or another.

I also really liked how the game managed to come up with factions who have their own interesting stories and clashing philosophical beliefs even in a world where, well, most people are scumbags. I think that’s the best thing I can say for Tyranny: it takes up a niche and then stretches that niche to its breaking point.

Miller: Yeah, you had mentioned “lawful good” before, which is an interesting idea to unpack. In Dungeons & Dragons, the moral spectrum is defined both by good and evil, but also law and chaos, and I think the latter of those two is where Obsidian went to find complexity. The two major factions you’re dealing with in the game are sort of representative of law and chaos. One leader and his forces are this very regimented and ordered group of soldiers, even if they’re still pretty evil. The other faction is this chaotic army of killers who have no respect for rule of law or the way things are supposed to be done, but they get their tasks completed through pure mob rule.

Between those two ideologies, there are some significant ideas to play with, and I think Obsidian did a good job of exploring that more nuanced understanding of morality in Tyranny.

One of the other topics I wanted to get your take on is the party members. For me, because most of my companions were pretty awful and unlikeable, I struggled to find a connection to them in the same way I would in some other similar RPGs. Did you find that to be true, or was there something refreshing or novel for you about AI teammates who were self-proclaimed murderers and traitors?

Javy: Initially i found it refreshing, but I think one of Tyranny’s failings is that it couldn’t make those characters interesting. It’s one thing to have monstrous characters as your companions, but you’ve got to make them intriguing in some way beyond how awful they are. Like, honestly, everyone who was my ally in this game felt like some third-rate Game Of Thrones henchmen who gets killed off by a random bandit. Evil and interesting is definitely a character type that’s possible, as proven by Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic’s HK-47 or even Saren in Mass Effect.

But yeah, notable companions is something that Tyranny doesn’t really do that well, and it’s bummer because it would be fascinating to find yourself working together with people who are downright villainous but have compelling reasons for being that way.

Miller: I think a couple of the characters had that quality. The most memorable for me was the beastwoman character (Kills-In-Shadow), who for me fit some of those criteria you described. Her culture was compelling, being sort of half-tribal and half-animalistic. She was disturbing, but also occasionally the mismatch of her attitudes with the other characters could be humorous, even if ultimately she was a pretty dark and disturbing companion.

But generally, I agree with you; I think I would have been much more enmeshed in Tyranny as a whole if I was more intrigued by the individual companions.

Another feature that we haven’t had a chance to talk about is the setting, which was actually one of the things I really liked in the game. In particular, I think the individual areas you visit, which are often wracked by these horrible magical edicts, really sell the idea of a world beaten into ruin. But I’ve talked to one of our other editors who played, and they didn’t love the setting as much. Where did you come down on that topic?

Javy: I was a big fan of it, actually. Maybe not the world itself in terms of the dark fantasy elements (they all felt pretty generic), but I think the amount of control you have over that world in the introductory sequence helps make it feel like it’s your own more than something like Baldur’s Gate or Pillars of Eternity even if its grandeur doesn’t match a setting like Arcanum: Of Steamworks And Magick Obscura.

But that doesn’t matter because we have such a strong role in helping shape the world. It’s truly a situation of interactivity making the stale and familiar fresh again, to the point that I’m looking forward to doing another full playthrough to see just how much everything changes.

So I guess since we’re talking about being EVIL, how do you think Tyranny stacks up against other games, like Dungeon Keeper, that also lets you be the bad guy/gal? Does its somber tone sets it apart, even if it doesn’t necessarily make it better? Do you think that Tyranny is worth playing through even if it might make the player uncomfortable, just for the novelty of the experience?

Miller: I think Tyranny is a really surprising game. Games like Dungeon Keeper or Overlord have a sort of mustache-twirling villainy to them that is amusing – kind of the same idea as that animated movie, Despicable Me. A sort of delighting in the bad guy, but in an amusing way.

Tyranny doesn’t really have that quality. It’s a deep and rewarding story, but it’s not tongue-in-cheek or humorous. It’s a pretty straight-faced attempt at confronting the nature of unchecked power, and a group of characters who have no choice but to act in evil ways to survive and thrive in that world.

Javy: Yeah, I'm still not entirely sure how to process Tyranny as an experience. It's arrived at a curious moment in our history and perhaps, more than we're willing to admit, serves as a clearer mirror to who we are than the vast majority of games. On one hand, I'm super thankful it exists because it's the only game I've played in the last two months that has served as something other than pure escapism, existing as an artifact that reflects the time and forcing me to confront some of the realities the world we live in right now.

However, at the same time, Tyranny's commitment to brutal nihilism feels short-sighted. To not allow the player to at least pursue hope is a limitation that borders on crippling.

I'm curious to see how the game's reputation takes shape in the years to come. It's a game that makes a classic, explicit, and sometimes compelling argument that the vast majority of people, particularly those with any smidge of power, are monsters. I hope that the future proves Tyranny's underlying philosophy wrong but I'd be lying if I said that my optimism wasn't in short, ever-diminishing supply as we find ourselves barreling toward uncertain times.

Pokémon Sun/Moon Set New Sales Record For Nintendo

The newest generation of Pokémon games have managed to smash the sales of former games in the series, as well as most other Nintendo titles. Sun and Moon have sold an astounding 3.7 million units in the Americas in the two weeks since the games came out, making it Nintendo's fast-selling game ever in that region. Sun and Moon crushed the previous record held by Pokémon X & Y, with an 85-percent increase in sales.

To give you an idea of how crazy this is, X & Y sold 15.84 million games over the course of their entire lifetime, boosting sales of the series overall to over 280 million units.Though these numbers are impressive, it seems Sun/Moon hasn't sold through its initial shipment just yet, which is probably a good thing considering the product shortages Nintendo fans frequently face.

Our Take
Nostalgia and Pokémon Go probably fueled these sales numbers quite a bit, but Sun/Moon also addressed some major problems plaguing the series. It'll be interesting to see how much these numbers jump when the Christmas rush sets in.

This year our Extra Life charity live stream displayed a host of Game Informer shenanigans, chiefly among them was the incredibly convincing murder mystery starring our beloved PC editor, Daniel Tack. 

For the second year in a row Tack was unable to join the crew for the 25-hour event. He still wanted to contribute, though, so he subjected himself to a series of poorly written, but beautifully directed skits from myself and Ben Hanson. During the live stream we released a new video or clue for every $5,000 raised. With the community's help we were able to unmask the killer and bring Tack back to life and on the stream (sort of).

Red Dead Redemption Rides Again On PS4 and PC Via PlayStation Now

The zombie-themed expansion Undead Nightmare will be playable the same day.

The PlayStation 3 version of the game will be available on PlayStation Now, which allows subscribers to stream classic PlayStation 3 titles to their PS4 or Windows PC. While it's not as ideal a solution as a full remaster would be, it's still terrific that PC players will finally be able to experience this outstanding game.

This Wireless Controller Fixes A Big Problem With The NES Classic Edition

One of the biggest gripes about the NES Classic Edition(besides its extreme scarcity) is how amazingly short the controller cable is. 8bitdo has a bluetooth solution to this conundrum that works with a variety of controllers as well as the packed-in NES30 seen above.

Besides the convenience of a world without wires, the NES30 allows you to access the home menu by pressing two buttons rather than hitting reset on the console. That means that not only can you sit a comfortable distance from the system while you play, but you also won't have to jump up to hit the reset button every time you want to switch games. The controller dongle is set to go on sale for $39.99 on December 11, though pre-orders are available on Amazon now. Our Take
If you can manage to get a hold of the NES Classic in the first place, this seems to be the best way to actually play the darn thing. A two-foot cord never should have been the length to begin with, and requiring players to press a button on the console to access the menu is just a hassle.

Our Take
I've been wanting to try Invisible Inc. but haven't picked it up yet because I'm not good at rogue-likes. Those kinds of questionable purchases are perfect for PS Plus and other comparable services, as they get players to take the plunge. Also, VVVVVV is great and you should play it. It's short, cute, and fun – just like me on a Saturday night.

Developer Lion Shield is made up of Pete Angstadt and Michael Peddicord, who have worked on games like Abzu, Journey, and Spore. The two have banded together to create Kingdoms and Castles, a game that borrows heavily from the Maxis school of city-builder games.

Although the game focuses on having you build up your town house by house, several elements can get in your way. Weather changes with the seasons (Winter can be a rough season), vikings and dragons can attack, and your population can starve. You can watch a trailer for the game showing Pre-Alpha footage below.

U.K. Ad Watchdog Rules No Man's Sky Steam Page Not In Violation

Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), an independent U.K. advertising regulator, ruled after investigation that the Steam page for Hello Games' No Man's Sky was not misleading to consumers.

The ASA followed up on 23 complaints regarding the page, which some believed showed content that was "not as depicted or described," according to the ASA.

The ASA ruling goes through the various complaints levied at the Steam page, including whether certain animals, the size of the space battles, and the HUD used in screens were in the game, as well as how representative the depictions of warp times between systems were and the assets' overall graphic quality.

The agency talked to Hello Games about the title, and the developer supplied a copy of the game and links to third-party footage backing up the studio's case. After sifting through everything, the ASA determined that the page was not misleading. An excerpt of the ruling reads:

The summary description of the game made clear that it was procedurally generated, that the game universe was essentially infinite, and that the core premise was exploration. As such, we considered consumers would understand the images and videos to be representative of the type of content they would encounter during gameplay, but would not generally expect to see those specific creatures, landscapes, battles and structures.

Our Take
After reading the ruling, it appears that the ASA took all of the complaints seriously and grasped the issues raised. Although not necessarily directly applicable to this situation, overall it is good to see that Valve has moved towards showing more in-game footage of titles on Steam to attempt to minimize consumer confusion in the future.

Early Version Of Ark: Survival Evolved Coming To PS4 Next Week

Studio Wildcard has been working to bring its dino-survival game Ark: Survival Evolved over to the PlayStation 4, and it's finally close. How close? Does next week work for you?

Ark: Survivor's Pack includes the content from the still-in-development Survival Evolved and its Scorched Earth expansion, and it will be available December 6. The bundle is priced at $54.99, and it will also give you access to the game's updates as it approaches a proper spring 2017 release. In addition, PlayStation 4 players can get the bionic Giganotosaurus skin and a set of manticore armor.  

If you're in North America and aren't quite ready to invest in both chunks of the game, you'll have to wait. In Europe, the base game and its expansion will be available separately, but they won't be available as standalone products here until spring.

Our Take
That's a tough skin to beat, as far as cosmetics go. Just don't bother asking why your character is still using spears if they're able to construct such an impressive technical marvel.

Super Mario Maker For Nintendo 3DS Review – Functional But Inferior

Super Mario Maker on Wii U quickly became a phenomenon after its release in 2015. More so than playing and building levels, seeing the creations of others became a popular spectator sport as makers came up with the most creative and difficult ways to challenge Mario players. Much of the charm of the console game (like its easy-to-use creation tools and perfect platforming) make it over to the 3DS. However, one of its most important features did not make the transition: sharing levels online. It holds the game back, but I still found plenty to appreciate about the portable Mario Maker.

Mario Maker on Wii U carefully doled out its tutorials over the course of a few days. You had to wait to learn new lessons and get new tools. This was done to not overwhelm players, but many like me advanced their Wii U’s internal clock in order to get access to all the tools faster. The tutorials of the 3DS version can be ignored, but are available all at once if you want them and the game is better for it. The optional tutorial serves as a nice refresher and features some funny dialogue between your previous trainer, Mary, and the edamame-obsessed pidgeon, Yamamura. It also puts a stronger emphasis not on just how to use the tools, but what makes a good Mario level.

Not all the creation options are available from the beginning. To unlock the advanced ones, you need to play through the new-for-3DS mode Super Mario Challenge – a collection of more than 70 new levels created by Nintendo. Each level also features a pair of medals awarded for completing specific tasks, like only defeating a certain type of enemy or getting a certain amount of coins. Going after these medals is fun, especially the stranger qualifiers that make you rethink how you play Mario. These levels are high-quality and offer incidental tutorial on what makes a good Mario level. Super Mario Challenge is a fun platformer campaign, and getting new mechanics is a worthwhile unlock. I prefer this way of expanding the tools over having to wait, or “hack” my Wii U.

The condensed 3DS screen makes each version of Mario, from 8-bit to modern, look great. The visual disparity between the Wii U and 3DS versions is minor, and it runs smoothly on the handheld, which makes the platforming as good as it has ever been. The switch between editing a level and playing it involves a brief load, but it does not slow things down enough to impede the process of instantly testing your creations. The touch-screen works well, too, making the act of dragging the bricks and enemies onto the screen simple and easy.



Online functionality, which is all found in the Course World mode, is present, but severely limited. You can play 100 Mario Challenge, which throws 100 random user-created levels from the Wii U version at you, or play Recommended Courses, which lets you choose from a collection of Wii U courses with positive feedback. On 3DS, seeking out specific levels or uploading your creations online is not possible. Those options made Mario Maker on Wii U the phenomenon it became, and to see them gone on 3DS is confusing and makes Course World a far less attractive destination. There simply isn’t much incentive to explore Course World outside of hoping you run into an interesting course someone made with the Wii U version of the game.

The only way to share levels with friends is to do it locally or through Street Pass. Exchanging levels with the person standing next to you is easy and quick. Sharing this way does not require you to beat the levels, which means you can send your friend an impossible undertaking. Challenging your friends with difficult levels was a highlight on the Wii U version; knowing a level could be completed was an important factor in sharing levels, and to see that requirement axed is another head-scratching limitation. The lack of online sharing theoretically encourages local collaboration, but I don’t enjoy trading levels back and forth to make changes. This new system makes it feel like I am passing along an unfinished painting, rather than a masterpiece meant to be appreciated.

Not being able to share levels online to get global feedback (or show off your creation to a friend across the country) holds the 3DS version of Super Mario Maker back significantly. The fun community aspect is almost entirely gone, which is disheartening. The ability to create, however, still feels great, and playing all of Nintendo’s new levels is worthwhile. Mario Maker encourages creativity and continues to be one of the best level creation tools ever made, but the limitations on sharing make the 3DS version an inferior experience compared to the Wii U original.

Reader Discussion: What Game Was Worth The Wait?

Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian release within seven days of one another. Both are games we've been waiting to play for a long time. We're still waiting for the verdict on The Last Guardian (look out for our review soon!) but reception for Final Fantasy XV has been positive. It begs the question, what long-delayed games and/or sequels have been worth the wait?

For me, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess felt like it took forever to release, after all its delays, and it was worth the wait. I love the dark, subtly electronic world of Twilight Princess, Midna is one of my favorite partners, and it has some fantastic dungeons. It was exactly the Zelda I wanted to play after being mostly underwhelmed by Wind Waker.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 Gets A Free-To-Play Trial Edition

PC, Xbox One MOBA Gigantic Entering Open Beta Next Week

Gigantic, the shooter-MOBA hybrid from Motiga and Arc Games, has been long in the making, but will soon be ready for you to get your hands on it.

The game will enter an Open Beta starting on December 8, which includes sixteen heroes in a League of Legends-style rotation, three maps, and the ability for players on both Xbox One and Windows 10 to play with each other. You can see an early trailer of the game below.

I haven't played Gigantic, but I'm hoping it actually works well as a cross-play title. I've been looking for a MOBA-like game on console as good as Monday Night Combat, so hopefully this will be it.

Overwatch's New Oasis Map Features Palm Trees, Killer Cars

Along with the recent overhaul of Symmetra, Blizzard is now testing out Overwatch's newest map, Oasis, on the PC version's Public Test Realm.

The map features a number of jump pads strewn about, which is a new addition for Overwatch. The map also has a number of cars driving by, which will actually kill players who wander too far from the objective.

Science-Fiction Weekly – Assassin's Creed, No Man's Sky, Rogue One, Dawn of Andromeda

My friends in Hollywood are convinced Assassin's Creed will be THE difference maker for video game movies. They say that it's tracking remarkably well, and could be the springboard release that sets up a promising future for video games on the silver screen. I told them that one successful film won't change anything. Game stories are markedly different than movie stories, and with the exceptions of Assassin's Creed, BioShock, or a handful of other games, I don't see that many options resonating well as films, unless the source material is dramatically altered. We'll have to wait and see what happens, but regardless of how Assassin's Creed turns out, I will continue to utter the Star Wars line "I have a bad feeling about this," whenever I hear of games like Portal or Watch Dogs getting optioned for film.

My two cents aside, 20th Century Fox released a new video focused specifically on Assassin's Creed's science-fiction elements. The short clip highlights Michael Fassbender's exceptional acting skills, but mostly shows how different the Animus is when stacked up against its video game counterpart, which was basically a glorified operating table or chair. The new Animus looks to connect directly to the central nervous system, and allows for full freedom of movement, meaning we'll see Fassbender's character, Callum Lynch, actually perform the same moves of his Spanish ancestor, the assassin Aguilar de Nerha. The new Animus is a silly looking device, but it makes sense to a degree. We'll likely see Lynch act out all of the moves of his primogenitor. Let's just hope he doesn't make love to anyone. Actually, I'm not sure if that action would clear out the theater or sell more tickets. Assassin's Creed opens in theaters on December 21, and is directed by Justin Kurzel.

In the week leading up to this release, you had best be heading to your local cinema to see Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This is a friendly reminder that tickets went on sale two days ago, so if you want to see it on day one (which is actually December 15, starting at 7 p.m.) you had best order them now. I sadly didn't get into the first showing, but will be seeing it just a half hour later at 7:30. Even if you don't have interest in Rogue One, I think you'll get a kick out of the latest teaser video, which is synced up to Darth Vader's iconic breathing. The scream at the end of it gave me shivers. Enjoy! This is one of the coolest Star Wars trailers yet.

And here's your obligatory SPOILER warning about Star Wars: Episode VIII. Take this with a grain of salt, but rumor has it a line of Luke Skywalker dialogue from the forthcoming film has leaked. Well-known Star Wars news guru, Mike Zeroh, says that numerous sources have confirmed it to be true, but he's still looking for more concrete backing. At one point in the film, Luke supposedly tells Rey "you contain the spark that will rekindle the fire." Mark Hamill, who reprises his role as Luke Skywalker, has previously said that Episode VIII is loaded with great dialogue that he could see turned into t-shirts. I wouldn't necessarily say this is a fantastic line; it's a bit clichéd, but it does get me excited for Rey's potential, and it does sound like something Luke would say. Time will tell on this one. The line is supposedly going to be spoken during the first trailer, which is rumored to hit early next year.

If you enjoyed the recent Ghostbusters reboot by Paul Feig, the odds of seeing a direct sequel are slim, but it sounds like the property's flame continues to burn bright. In an interview on the Mr. Wavy podcast, Ivan Reitman says that we can expect plenty of news in the coming years. “There’s going to be many other Ghostbusters movies, they’re just in development right now," he said. I would love to see Reitman at the helm again, but that might be as much of a stretch as getting a sequel with Jillian Holtzmann and company again.

The only gaming news this week is actually quite huge. No Man's Sky, the most talked about and complained about game of the year, received a significant upgrade this week. Hello Games quietly ushered in update 1.1, also known as "Foundation." From the outset of play, players can now enter two new modes: Survival, a more challenging experience, and Creative, an avenue of play that provides unlimited resources and no building costs. Even if you are continuing your current game, new building options are available in this update. You can build save points, farm over a dozen new elements, and even claim a home planet where you can build a base. Hello Games has added more variety to the planet types, which now include locations devoid of life, such as moons. The base can be outfitted with bio-dependent crops that replenish over time, and you can recruit aliens to help out with farming, engineering, or other needs. The base can be expanded upon, customized, and tinkered with whenever you return home (and if you have the needed resources). The update offers a wealth of new content, making No Man's Sky a more robust experience. Is that enough to get you to come back? I'm going to give it another shot after the holiday blitz of new releases comes to an end, but I'm still wary of the mission path and what lies at the center of the universe. That breadcrumb trail doesn't interest me at all. The video below does a nice job of detailing the improvements in the patch.

It turns out Mass Effect isn't the only game exploring the Andromeda galaxy. Dawn of Andromeda, a new 4x game from Iceberg Interactive, launches on Steam on December 1. In a twist, the game's story doesn't focus on mankind exploring a new galaxy, but rather its original home. That's right, Andromeda is where mankind originated in this game. We're returning to reclaim it. The game features a mix of pre-designed and randomly generated races, complete with unpredictable A.I., giving each playthough a unique taste. Players can also play as any faction, each offering different victory conditions and paths through the galaxy. The game weighs heavily on the expand and exterminate elements of 4x gaming. Diplomacy systems, technology upgrades, and a wealth of governing options are available. You can even bring in A.I. to help govern the micromanaging of specific systems. The trailer below sets the stage for the adventure that hits in just a couple of days.

Ubisoft announced yesterday that all their VR experiences will have cross-platform multiplayer. Eagle Flight, Werewolves Within, and Star Trek: Bridge Crew players will be able to join each other across PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive. 

This multiplayer component for Eagle Flight was updated today, while the other two games will have the feature at launch. The wait won't be too long, though, as Werewolves Within comes out on December 6, while Star Trek: Bridge Crew is slated for March 14.

EA Access (Xbox One) and Origin Access (PC) members will be able to play all of Titanfall 2's online multiplayer for free from November 30 to December 4. The free trial will extend to everyone on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (through Origin) on December 2 and will go until December 4.

This coincides with the free release of Angel City, a returning multiplayer map from the first Titanfall. The remastered map will be available to those who pre-ordered Titanfall 2 on November 30 and December 3 for everyone else. Angel City also comes with other free content along with optional paid cosmetic items. A new Pilot execution, B3 Wingman Elite sidearm, and six Titan kits round out the free stuff. The paid content runs the gamut from paint jobs to callsigns to camo packs. For a more detailed rundown, read the full list here.

Our Take
Whether or not it's because of supposedly disappointing sales for Titanfall 2, this is a great idea. Coinciding the free content with a free weekend is a decent one-two punch to hopefully get more players on board with Titanfall 2's awesome multiplayer.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, More Now Backwards Compatible On Xbox One

Anyone looking to revisit older Elder Scrolls games after finishing the Remastered Edition of Skyrim can now put off digging around for their old consoles for at least one entry.

A few other titles are also making their way to the backwards compatibility list. Medal of Honor: Airbrone, Trine 2, and Astropop are also now playable on Xbox One.

Pokémon Sun and Moon's First Global Mission Starts Today

Capitalizing off its impressive sales records, Pokémon Sun and Moon have started a worldwide challenge to catch 100 million of the little monsters. Anyone who has either game can join in the fun, and there's a hefty reward as well.

If the lofty goal of 100 million Pokémon caught is met, then every player who took part will be awarded 1,000 Festival Coins, though even failing will net everyone 100 coins as a consolation prize.

The mission is available until December 13, which should give plenty of time to grab a copy and help out the other Pokémon Trainers.

Hand Of Fate 2 Is Now Coming To PS4, New Character Revealed

Defiant Development has revealed that Hand Of Fate 2, the sequel to the indie collectible card game/RPG hybrid from 2015, is now coming to PlayStation 4. The game was previously announced for both PC and Xbox One.

Defiant Development also revealed that a new companion character named Estrella Fiore (pictured above):

Captain Estrella Fiore will be a terror at range, and while her interests align with the player's, a fearsome companion. However, should the player find themselves on the wrong side of the Empire, Estrella will have some hard choices to make. On the tabletop, her unwavering persistence will also grant a second attempt during the new Pendulum minigame, designed to test precision and timing. 

Our heroine will lean on Estrella and other companions for support as she clashes with all-new enemy factions, including the new Greed and Frost suits. The Greed faction employs  deadly assassins and alchemists to hound the player with swift attacks and evasive maneuvers, while Frost’s Northerner Giants leverage brute force and deadly homemade weapons to deal massive amounts of damage.

Nintendo, Universal Theme Parks Designed To Be Fun

More than a year ago, Nintendo and Universal Parks & Resorts announced that the companies were collaborating on building Nintendo-themed attractions at Universal's parks. While they're still not providing much in the way of concrete details, the pair have released a video that broadly speaks to what they're hoping to accomplish. Spoiler alert: They want it to be fun.

In the video below, you can see Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Universal's Mark Woodbury talking vaguely about their goals. Essentially, the parks – which will be at Universal's Hollywood, Orlando, and Japan locations – will be A) interactive B) fun for all ages and C) will have multiple attractions.

They're still in the planning and creative phases, and the parks will open over the next several years.

 

Our Take
As a person who enjoys having fun, this sounds like it's in my wheelhouse. I only hope that it's a manageable amount of fun, and not so much fun that I become a husk of a person after leaving.

Lego Worlds Coming To Consoles

Developer Traveller's Tales has announced that its free-form Lego building title Lego Worlds is coming to the PS4 and Xbox One in February.

At that time, the game will also be leaving Steam Early Access on PC, a program it's been in for 18 months.

In a dev letter on the game's Steam Page, the team says that all Early Access players "will be receiving a little something from us on launch day, too."
