As any fan of the Alien franchise is aware, xenomorphs are bad news. Death follows wherever they go, and the devastation they bring is reflected in the latest poster for Alien: Covenant, the upcoming entry in the series of films.
This gruesome scene of humans and aliens tangled together made a powerful impact on eager fans. Art history buffs noticed the poster's resemblance to classic pieces such as Auguste Rodin's The Gates of Hell (La porte de l'Enfer).
The sculpture, which stands just under 20 feet tall, depicts a scene from the Inferno chapter of Dante Aligheri's Divine Comedy. Users posting on this Alien Covenant fan site noticed that the poster shares a similar approach to The Gates of Hell, with the Xenomorph standing above the fallen and twisted bodies below.
Other fans noted the same thematic presentation in Jan van Eyck's The Last Judgment (pictured right), a Biblically-inspired work on display in The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Alien: Covenant comes to theaters on May 19. Check out the latest trailer for the movie here.
