The fact that PC virtual reality headsets are prohibitively expensive has not escaped the attention of the manufacturers. The high cost to entry has undoubtedly played a major role in why adoption has proven slow for the Oculus Rift. Today the company made an aggressive move to make the headset more accessible to prospective VR owners, slashing the price of the Rift/Touch bundle by $200. Now you can get the head mounted display and motion controllers for $598.
To drive adoption rates of the Touch controllers for current Rift owners, which just launched this past December, Oculus is also slashing that cost in half. The $199 controller set now costs $99. "The reason it's so important for us to drop the price of the Touch so much is that we've had rapid adoption of Touch by Rift users, but not 100-percent adoption," said Oculus VP of content Jason Rubin. "We don't want to leave stragglers." Additional Oculus Sensors now cost $59.
Many prospective Rift owners may still need to upgrade or replace their PCs to be compatible with the head mounted display. Rubin said while Rift ready PCs cost around $999 when the headset launched, they are now available for $699. You can even get a minimum spec machine for $499. "We've dropped the [total] price of getting into VR by 30 percent," Rubin said.
