Players Can Now Buy Games On Twitch

One of the appeals of watching streamers play a game is to determine whether it interests you or not. As of today, gamers can make the jump from watching to playing entirely through Twitch with the new option to buy games directly from the online streaming site.

First announced in February, Twitch's setup allows users to purchase games from a streamer's channel page. If the streamer is partnered with Twitch, they will receive 5 percent of the proceeds, with 70 percent then going to the developers.

Twitch currently has 50 PC titles available for purchase. In-game content is also available for sale, and any purchase of at least $4.99 nets buyers a Twitch crate for their account. These crates contain badges, emotes, and other accessories, including some exclusive to the title purchased if applicable. Additionally, from now until May, Twitch is hosting a crate giveaway drawing. More details about the giveaway, as well as the new selling system, can be found here.

Check out Twitch's original announcement here, as well as updates on TwitchCon 2017 and a new feature that allows users to change their username.

Our Take
This is a big development in the digital distribution arena. With titles like For Honor and Telltale's The Walking Dead, Twitch already has some big names in its library, but I'm curious to see how the need for the Twitch app, Uplay, and so on compares to other online retailers.
