Nintendo Shows Snippet Of Splatoon 2's Humpback Pumptrack Map

Splatoon 2 may not look all that different from the original game, but you can bet the game will have some new maps. After the conclusion of a recent Splatoon tournament, Nintendo showed off some footage of a new map for the game, Humpback Pumptrack.

The amp is inspired by an indoor BMX track, and features topsy-turvy inclines. The map looks fairly large, too, if the ramps in the distance of the images Nintendo showed off are any indication. Nintendo's clip is only 45 seconds long, but if you're excited for more Splatoon action, that might be all you need.

Our Take
Splatoon 2 continues to show off how great the series' art direction is, and how its inspired take on multiplayer makes for locations you won't find on other battlefields.

Tencent, Sony Lead Global Game Revenues In 2016

Market research firm Newzoo has compiled a list of the 25 companies who make the most money from games, and the results both what you expected and a bit surprising.

Newzoo's ranking takes into account only game revenue, which removes hardware such as consoles and PC parts from the equation, but does include subscription fees, such as those from PlayStation Network or Xbox Live. The ranking is based companies' financial earnings reports from throughout 2016, though it uses the calendar year instead of the fiscal year (which ends next week as opposed to the actual end of the year). Additonally, as Newzoo states, "For companies that do not split out their game revenues, the analysis includes estimates, which may or may not be indicated explicitly." The top-earning companies under these stipulations are as follows:

1. Tencent
2. Sony
3. Activision Blizzard
4. Microsoft
5. Apple
6. Electronic Arts
7. NetEase
8. Google
9. Bandai Namco
10. Nintendo
11. Square Enix
12. Warner Bros.
13. Ubisoft
14. Take-Two Interactive
15. Nexon
16. Mixi
17. Konami
18. GungHo Entertainment
19. Disney
20. DeNA
21. Sega
22. NCSoft
23. Facebook
24. Zynga
25. Colopl

It should be no surprise that Tencent leads the pack, since they own League of Legends developer Riot, as well as a number of other popular online games, including Crossfire and Clash Royale. Second and third place belong to Sony and Activision Blizzard, which makes sense, considering Sony's more global presence in games over Microsoft (especially in Japan) and Activision's conquering of several fronts with popular shooters and sports games.

Nintendo doesn't fair as well, though 2016 admittedly was not a banner year for them, with the decline of the Wii U and the limited number of high-selling games on the 3DS. Some of the most surprising points are Take-Two's lower-than-expected ranking, considering the high popularity of Grand Theft Auto V and other games in its catalog. And while we may like to think of them as being removed from the game scene at this point, Konami is still making quite of a bit of revenue from its game division.

Our Take
This is yet another reminder that games are a global phenomenon, because I haven't heard of a couple of names on this list, like Mixi, Colopl, or NetEase. Although I'm guessing that at some point, I've encountered or played something they're a part of. Let's see... nope, haven't played anything by NetEase. But they licence Blizzard games for use in China. That counts, right?

Yooka-Laylee Developer Thanks Fans With Homage To DK Rap

Plenty of the developers at Playtonic (makers of Yooka-Laylee) have a background with Rare, and they're not shy about it. Their latest video for Yooka-Laylee fulfills a stretch goal set by the game's Kickstarter campaign, and it's the Yooka-Laylee Rap, an homage to the old DK Rap in Donkey Kong 64

The cadence is similar, and I think the beat's a little better, actually, but it doesn't quite capture the magic of the original, I think. Also, the actual rapping in both of these songs was never good, even if it did get stuck in my head more than I would have liked. You can watch the video below and see if you agree.

Your April Fools' Day 2017 Round-Up

April Fools' Day is always kind of a toss-up when it comes to gaming. On one hand, I think the fundamental concept of a bunch of gaming companies creating fake products or features for games that are usually not very funny is kind of lame. On the other hand, sometimes the jokes are really good. On your newly-spawned, incredibly useful third hand, the absolute best jokes are usually stuff I'd like to see happen but probably won't. On the final, robotic and fully sentient fourth hand, sometimes those things do become real, and April Fools' Day can occasionally act as a proving ground for outlandish-but-cool ideas.

Anyway, here's the best April Fools' Day-related gaming stuff we've found.

Check back throughout the day for regular updates!

Street Fighter EX Characters Return In New Fighting Game
This one straddles the line between real and fake. The game featured in the above video, which features characters from the long-forgotten Street Fighter EX series, is fully playable, according to Arika's Ichiro Mihara. In fact, the game was playable at an exhibition event in Japan, though Mihara was a bit concerned that no one was going to show up because everyone thought it was fake. The "Fools'" part was supposed to be that this was the game the previously-announced exhibition would be centered around. Considering the amount of effort put into this, I'm going to guess it's in the "gauging interest" category where, if the reaction is positive enough, it could move forward. And I really want it to.

Netflix Live
It's technically not about video games, but Will Arnett was in a game once, which is close enough. Anyway, Netflix Live has Arnett narrating random goings-on in the Netflix office, supposedly live (it showed up on March 31 as "sneak peek" to a new show). It's surprisingly well done considering the premise. And although you'll now have to view on Netlfix it with a big "CANCELED" sticker on the whole thing, it's worth watching.

Fire Emblem: Battle Of Revolution
Because Japan's quite a few hours ahead of us, the official page for the fake Fire Emblem game it announced yesterday (our time) is no longer available. So let me paint a picture of it for you: it was going to feature retro-style graphics and be out for the 3DS and Switch, and would launch the same day as the actual Fire Emblem game out this month in Japan, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. It was kind of funny. You had to be there.

Clash Royale's Ultra Magical Chest And Clan Wars
Clash Royale's Ultra Magical Chest would have required you to score a perfect match of the game (which is statistically impossible), and you have netted you thousands of rare cards. The video highlighting how to get a perfect match in the game (again, you cannot do this) is pretty good. Additionally, SuperCell released a screenshot of the much-anticipated Clan Wars feature, which looks like a huge mess.

The Street Fighter Academy Quiz
Capcom has cooked up a legitimately difficult quiz of Street Fighter minutiae featuring Chun-Li, Ryu, and Juri in school attire. you can play it here.

Va-11 Hall-A: A Good Boy Edition
The Switch version of Va-11 Hall-A would feature Dante from Devil May Cry, a 3D mode, and make good use of the system's HD Rumble feature.

Making Game Infarcer's Metal Gear Solid VI Cover

This year's cover of Game Infarcer (our annual parody feature) pokes fun at Konami and the Metal Gear series. How did it come together? You can find out right here.

We sit down with artist Zander Cannon (the creator of Kaijumax) to talk about the process as he shows us the artwork at various stages. We run through the plethora of hidden jokes, and Cannon points out one that even hardcore Metal Gear fans probably missed. Check out the full video below.

Game Infarcer 2017 Edition: Metal Gear Solid VI, Nintendo Switch XL, And More

Here at Game Informer, we don't try to trick you on April 1. Instead, we use the prank-filled holiday as an excuse to release a parody magazine called Game Infarcer. Everything in it is fake, from the games to the editor-in-chief (though sometimes it veers eerily close to reality). In case you missed the feature in print, you can now peruse this year's edition right here.

As usual, it starts with a wonderful cover illustration from artist and Kaijumax creator Zander Cannon depicting what a post-Kojima version of Metal Gear Solid VI might look like (Cannon also drew our Pokémon-themed illustration). After that, you get pretend news, reviews, and more – all aimed at poking fun at the gaming industry.

We hope you enjoy this year's edition. As you go through the pages, don't forget to click the images for easier reading.

Next up: Top five, gear, and various newsy bits.
