Publisher Screaming Villains has crept out of the shadows to announce that its re-release of infamous FMV game Night Trap will be coming to PlayStation 4 and Steam this August. Releasing 25 years after the Sega CD original, physical versions will be available on PS4 as of August 11th, with the digital version coming to both PS4 and Steam on August 15th.
For those who can't get enough of the kitsch horror game that launched a congressional hearing, multiple physical options are available. A Collector's Edition, limited to 3,000 copies, features the game, a reversible Sega CD-style cover art and box, a poster, a cassette tape featuring the Night Trap theme song, and an embroidered patch. The standard edition, limited to 5,000 copies, does not boast the cassette tape, patch, or Sega CD-style box. Both versions are being brought to you by Limited Run Games.
Night Trap was originally released in 1992 before it was pulled off shelves due to the fervor surrounding it. Players took the role of an investigator who, with the aid of cameras strategically placed around a house, watched over a group of teenage girls to protect them from vampires, as you do. Its racy and violent content placed it center stage in the 1990s discourse about video games, and subsequent congressional hearing into the same subject.
The remastered title is also set to launch on Xbox One, though no date for that version has been given.
Our Take
Night Trap has its defenders, but it has always been strange that this game is so historically important. Night Trap's backlash lead to the creation of ESRB ratings, which meant that publishers could release more adult-oriented games without worrying about console manufacturers or stores rejecting them because children could buy them. To a large extent, games like Resident Evil would not exist without Night Trap.
