Telltale Removes Image Of Assassinated Russian Ambassador From Batman: The Enemy Within

Telltale has released an update that removes the real-life photo of the assassinated Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, from Batman: The Enemy Within's second episode. This photo was used to help portray a bank robbery in one of the game's scenes.

The second episode, The Pact, released earlier this week and mistakenly contained an edited version of a real-life photo portraying the body of Karlov, who was shot dead in December 2016. Players noticed this peculiar inclusion and Telltale has since issued a statement. Telltale was quick to release an update which removes the photo from the game completely. You can read Telltale's statement below:

An update to the game has been submitted this morning that will be removing the image across all platforms. We regret this incident occurred, and we are taking appropriate action internally to ensure that we continue to maintain our high standards in Production and Quality Assurance.

An update has been pushed to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For more on Batman: The Enemy Within, read our reviews of both episode one and two.

Our Take
It's not uncommon for game designers to base their work off of real-world images, but these are normally vetted very carefully. It looks like this one fell through the cracks, and it's very possible that someone wasn't careful or did not know the full context of the photograph. Nonetheless, the results are abhorrent, and it's good to see that Telltale was quick to issue a removal as well as apologize for its inclusion in the first place.
