Respawn Entertainment, the creators of Titanfall and many of the people behind the Call of Duty series, have been acquired by Electronic Arts for $315 million in cash, with a possible bonus of $140 million.
Previously only an EA Partner with Titanfall, Respawn was founded by Jason West and Vince Zampella. The two were fired by Activision seemingly over issues pertaining to Call of Duty and signed on as a partner for EA for the Xbox One launch title of Titanfall after founding Respawn. They followed it up with Titanfall 2 in 2016, which was released only a week before EA's flagship first-person shooter Battlefield 1. Zampella expressed consternation with this release schedule in interviews.
During their most recent earnings call, EA reminded investors that Titanfall 2 sold below expectations, but "still sold very well," according to CFO Blake Jorgunsen. It is possible EA had been preparing investors for news of the acquisition.
Sources tell us that the studio is divided about acquisition, with many not at all happy about being under a large publisher again. Separate sources have also told us that founder Vince Zampella plans to stay.
Our Take
After the stellar Titanfall 2, and knowing EA's reputation for their acquisitions, it is easy to be scared of what his means for the future of the studio. Hopefully everything works out for the best.
