Fortnite Passes 20 Million Players

Epic Games has announced that its shooter/builder/survival game Fortnite has reached 20 million players across all modes since the game launched in early access this past summer. The shooter received a significant shot in the arm when it launched its free-to-play standalone Battle Royale mode in September, which 1 million players logged onto its first day.

You can see Epic's announcement tweet below, as well as a small sizzle reel the team put together to commemorate the accomplishment.

Our Take
I guess Fortnite found its winning formula in the Battle Royale style of play. Ever since the free-to-play standalone mode was added, player numbers have skyrocketed for Epic Games' survival title. It probably helps that the big name in the Battle Royale genre, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, is still a paid product and is only available on PC until December 12. It will be interesting to see if the success of the free-to-play Fortnite Battle Royale on consoles will impact the success or popularity of PUBG when it launches on Xbox One in December for $30.
