In their financial call today, Ubisoft commented that they believe the generation will last at least another two years.
The mega-publisher's reasoning is that the PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X have extended this generation beyond traditional time frames. Ubisoft clarify that they have no insider information they can share publicly that makes them believe this, but they expect this generation will last longer than initially expected.
Ubisoft also expressed support for console refreshes in general, believing that new hardware like the Pro and X work better for selling software than peripherals like Move and Kinect. With hardware refreshes, Ubisoft can produce the same games and sell to all four consoles without minimal investment or need to segment the audience like peripherals can.
The Xbox One X actually came out today! You can check out our review for the console here.
How much longer do you see this generation going? Let us know below in the comments.
Our Take
Ubisoft isn't wrong that the console refreshes will help for their needs, but I am not sure the audience will be happy with another extended generation. On the other hand, a lot of people feel like the generation just got started and aren't eager to buy new hardware again, especially if they just got the refreshes.
