Breakaway From Double-Helix And Amazon Game Studios Officially Cancelled

Breakaway, a competitive multiplayer game made by Killer Instinct and Strider developers Double Helix Games after their acquisition by Amazon, has been officially cancelled.

The game went into indefinite hiatus in October 17 as the team struggled to get the game to come together amidst feedback from the public alpha. Over the weekend, Amazon confirmed that the fantasy-sport title is no more and the team is now moving on to pursue other projects.

"Since our last announcement, we have worked to implement community feedback and iterate on Breakaway's core gameplay," reads a post from the developers on the game's subreddit. "While we have developed many ideas and made a lot of progress, we are also setting a very high bar for ourselves. In spite of our efforts, we didn't achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we all hoped it could be. After a lot of soul searching, the team decided to focus on new ideas. As a result, Breakaway is no longer in active development."

The team is leaving the door open for returning to the game, but does not seem optimistic about that prospect.

Breakaway was one of three games Amazon pointed to as part of its newly formed Amazon Game Studios, the other two being MMO-lite New World and sci-fi shooter Crucible. Double Helix was the first major acquisition by Amazon, coming quickly after Double Helix's successful work on Capcom's Strider reboot.

Our Take
Hopefully Double Helix gets a new project they can be happy with. They have been working on this game since 2014, so it must not be easy to move on to something else, but they're a talented studio as evidenced by games like Killer Instinct. They might make something like that next.
