Nintendo Reveals SNES Classic Edition

Just because it's not surprising doesn't mean it's not good news; after the huge success of the NES Classic Edition last year, Nintendo is officially following up with the 16-bit version of the same idea.

The SNES Classic Edition will release on September 29 for $80, and contains 21 pre-loaded titles. One notable feature of this iteration is that the base unit comes with 2 wired controllers for multiplayer games.

You can see the full list below with tons of great games, but the most interesting inclusion is Star Fox 2 – a complete-but-unreleased sequel to the space-combat classic.

The SNES Classic Edition includes:

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • EarthBound
  • Final Fantasy III
  • F-ZERO
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Kirby’s Dream Course
  • The Legend of Zelda™: A Link to the Past
  • Mega Man X
  • Secret of Mana
  • Star Fox
  • Star Fox 2
  • Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Punch-Out!!
  • Yoshi’s Island

Our Take
With that list of games, this is an absolute home run for Nintendo – assuming the company has patched up some of the issues from the NES Classic Edition. The first thing Nintendo needs to nail down is supply; the NES Classic Edition was very difficult to get, and it's not fair to fans to make it so hard to buy a product. Other issues – like controller cord length – were inconvenient, but are at least fixable. The fact that Nintendo is including two controllers this time shows it is at least listening.
