Amazon Game Studios has halted development of its hero-based fantasy team sports title Breakaway.
Developer Double Helix Studios was working on the title's core gameplay and implementing fan feedback from the title's alpha, but it didn't survive the process. "In spite of our efforts," reads a dev post on Reddit, "we didn't achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we hoped it could be."
Breakaway was unveiled at TwitchCon 2016, featured Twitch integration, and was part of a trio of in-development PC titles from Amazon Game Studios. Crucible (a class-based last-man-standing title) and New World (a MMO sandbox game) are still in the works.
Our Take
I haven't played the game, but it sounds like the devs may have come across the same problem that Dan Tack surmised when he played the title in the fall: "I'm concerned that despite many differences that Breakaway does from the genre template, the hero shooter market is simply too packed with titles right now..."
