How Way Of The Passive Fist Is Building On The Beat-'Em-Up

The beat-'em-up is often cloaked in nostalgia, as most modern titles tend to borrow heavily from the genre's heyday in the late 80s and early 90s. That also means that with a few exceptions, most of them don't move beyond the simple formula of walking up to bad guys and punching them a few times.

Way of the Passive Fist is a little different. Rather than have you mash it out against waves of enemies, you need to think defensively, as your best option is to parry or dodge oncoming attacks. This gives combat a more methodical feel, and you having to think a little more about each action.

To learn more about how the game is iterating on the beat-'em-up (and making it more accessible to players of all stripes), I sat down with Jason Canam, the creative director at Household Games, which stopped by on its way to Seattle, where it will be showing the game off at PAX's indie Megabooth. We talk about the Way of the Passive Fist, beat-'em-ups, customizable difficulty options, and how you can play the game one-handed if you really want.
