Vive Adding A Subscription Option To Its Viveport Store

HTC has revealed plans to offer a subscription service to its Viveport app store. Viveport is the primary way that Vive users download games, videos, and other content for the company's Vive VR platform.

Speaking to Variety, Viveport president Rickard Steiber compared the option to Netflix. He also said that having a consistent base of customers that a subscription model offers might entice content providers who haven't yet committed to Viveport into developing for it. According to Steiber, there are more than 1,000 items on the storefront at this time, and that number is expected to triple by the end of the year.

HTC hasn't announced pricing for the monthly subscriptions at this time.

Our Take
According to The Verge, developers and publishers will have to opt into the service for their content to become available to subscribers. Depending upon the amount of support that devs do or don't put into the model, this could be a huge hurdle to overcome. Without big-name releases or interesting exclusive options, will people find this a good enough deal to bother subscribing?
